SPENCER — North Rowan scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh and rallied to beat South Stanly, 9-8, in Yadkin Valley Conference baseball on Thursday.

South Stanly (2-2, 2-1) had just scored three in the  top of the seventh to stretch its lead to 8-3, but North came back, doing most of the damage with two outs.

Sydney Patton’s roller toward third  base with two outs in the seventh ended the game. North scored the tying run when Patton beat the throw to first base and added the winning run when the throw got away.

McGwire Smith (2-0)  pitched his second complete game for North. He pitched better than it sounds. He had to work around six errors.

South Stanly took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Smith didn’t allow another run until the fifth.

Smith also led North at the plate, going 4-for-4. Jordan Goodine was 3-for-4, and Kobe Dupree had two hits.  Both teams had 10 hits.

Charlie Durham made several big plays in right field for North.

North plays at South Stanly today in a 5 p.m. game.

CONCORD — West Rowan managed only three hits and lost at Cox Mill, 2-1, in non-conference play on  Thursday.

Logan Sproul, Payne Stolsworth and Mykal Berger had the West hits.

Chandler Riley’s triple keyed Cox Mill’s two-run third inning for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, West loaded the bases with no outs on an error and hits by Sproul and Berger.  Cameron  Grhaham’s  sac fly got a run  home, but West stranded two runners.

West (1-2) put two men on base in the seventh with an error and a walk, but Daniel Durham struck out on a foul tip to end the game.

Stolsworth took the loss. He allowed the two runs. Olen Stamper struck out four in two innings.

Prep softball

KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan won  a non-conference game at A.L. Brown, 5-2, on Thursday.

Caroline Johnson had three hits for the Mustangs (1-1). Kaitlyn Samples drove in two runs to back the pitching of Karley Teague.

LEXINGTON —  Salisbury  beat Lexington, 16-0, in five innings on Thursdsay. Ellen Yang pitched a complete game  with 11 strikeouts. Anaiya Fulson led the Salisbury offense with four hits.

TROUTMAN — Sierra Ferguson homered and drove in four runs, but Davie County still lost to South Iredell, 18-11, on Thursday.

Bridgett Tierney, Anna Devereaux  and Emilee Dishman had three hits each.

Kelby Goodrum and  Graycie Bustle had four hits each for the Vikings.

Davie (0-4) led 7-3 after three, but the Vikings (3-0) kept pounding away. Davie made nine errors.

A high school softball Easter Tournament with Civitan sponsorship is scheduled for Salisbury Community Park.

West Rowan, East Rowan, Carson, South Rowan, Mount Pleasant, Mooresville, Cox Mill and Central Cabarrus will be the teams involved.

Prep soccer

CHINA GROVE — Carson defeated Robinson, 5-0, in a non-conference matchup on Thursday.

Gracie Thomason and Lani Isley scored two goals each for the Cougars (1-2).  Sarah Musselwhite scored the other goal.

SALISBURY — Salisbury survived its first tight game of the season with a  come-from-behind 3-2 non-conference win against Concord.

Concord girls coach Taylor Strode assists with the Salisbury boys team and came back to Ludwig Stadium with a good squad.

Salisbury took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when freshman Lillie Rusher sent a corner kick into the box. A  deflection saw the ball land at Anna Grace Woolley’s feet and she calmly knocked it home.

Concord got a 1-all tie on a deflection for an own goall and a goal by Julia Patrum  Patrum beat several defenders and keeper Emily Mann.

Trailing for the first  time this season, Salisbury stepped up pressure. Julia Honeycutt found Freya Obermueller, who knotted the game with 18 minutes left.  The deciding goal  game on a penalty kick that was converted by senior captain Honeycutt.

“It was a contest that clearly could have gone either way,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “We were very fortunate to have the penalty called in our favor and there isn’t any player I trust more with the game on the line than Julia Honeycutt.”

Parrish said Patrum is one of the best players he’s seen in his 17 seasons at Salisbury.

“Her pace, skill, and stamina is incredible,” Parrish said. “Piper Muire marked her most of the night (with the occasional spell from Honeycutt) and really had her hands full.”

Salisbury plays at Oak Grove on Monday.

LANDIS — Madison Henry scored two goals and Michelle Rivera had 12 saves in South Rowan’s 3-0 CCC win against North Davidson on Wednesday.

Karigan Ford  scored for the unbeaten Raiders. Rhiannon Kimmer and Taylor Mauldin had assists. Rivera stopped a PK.

Rylee Corriher made 18 saves for West Rowan in Wednesday’s 8-0 loss to Central Cabarrus. Kacy Cole played well defensively. West plays at home against Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.

Carly Lowry scored for East Rowan in a 1-0 win against North Hills.

Lauren Weisensel made 21 saves for the Mustangs in a 2-0 loss to Wheatmore.

In Wednesday’s 6-0 win against Mount Pleasant, the Mustangs (2-1) got goals from  Jackie Lowry, Alexis Avalos, Macie Curlee, Vallie Vasquez, Sydney Trexler and Lauren Cook.

East Rowan plays at undefeated South Rowan tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Prep tennis

MIDWAY —  Salisbury defeated Oak Grove, 9-0, in Central Carolina Conference play on Thursday.

Winning in singles were Roarke Burton, Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar.

Winning in doubles were Burton/Drye, Rodas/McGee and Archer/Salazar.

Salisbury plays a big match at Ledford on Monday. Salisbury (3-0)  and Ledford  are the only unbeaten teams in the league.

Prep wrestling

North Rowan’s Darren Williams is on the All-Yadkin Valley Conference team.

Uwharrie Charter’s Hayden Waddell is the Wrestler of the Year, while South Stanly’s Michael Curlee is coach of the year.

Prep track

In track and field on Thursday, Carson’s boys and West Davidson’s girls won a tri-meet that also included South Davidson.

Winning for Carson’s boys were Jacob Higgins (800, 1600), Christian Turners (110 and 300 hurdles), Joseph Collins (discus), John Malloy (shot) and Hunter Courtney (long jump).

Carson’s girls got wins from the 4×100 and 4×200 teams.

McKenzie Gadson won the 100 and the long jump. Brianna Hargrove won the 200 meters and the 100 hurdles. Maci Cooper won the triple jump.

Pfeiffer softball

Junior shortstop Vada Blue Sherrill   hit three homers, including two grand slams, in a sweep of J.C. Smith on Wednesday.

Sherrill hit two more homers on Thursday at Salem.

SAC athletics

Wingate leads the 2017-18 South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award Standings at the conclusion of winter sports.

  Carson-Newman moved into second place with 727.5 points after capturing the women’s basketball championship.

Catawba’s 387 points is good for the No. 8 spot, while Coker lands at No. 9 with 340.66 points.
