The members of the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter (Delta Xi Omega) and Livingstone College’s Chapter (Alpha Xi) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority collaboratively observed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day of Service, “A Day On, Not A Day Off” by engaging in community service initiatives. The sorority’s international program of service parallels with the initiatives for MLK Day of Service. Lillian Morgan, chapter program chairman, planned and coordinated three community service projects.

Chapter members began the day by preparing and serving breakfast to approximately 65 guests at the Rowan Helping Ministries meal site. In support of the sorority’s international program target, Family Strengthening, the chapter members prepared and delivered “Meals From the Heart“ to three families in the North Rowan area in the afternoon. In the evening, the members fellowshipped at a minority owned/operated business for dinner and collected over 165 pair of socks to be donated to the One Church One Child Program of the Rowan County Department of Social Services. Approximately 185 citizens were impacted through the chapter members’ MLK Day of Service and implementing the sorority’s international program.

The 2018 Salisbury Alumnae Chapter’s leadership team is: Sh’Myra Moore, president; Lillian Morgan, vice-president; Lovetta Moore, secretary; Tanya Dixon-Neely, assistant secretary; Sh’Rae Moore, corresponding secretary; Carolyn Holt, treasurer; Renese Bates, financial secretary; Linda McCullough, assistant financial secretary; Sarah Lightner, Ivy Leaf reporter; Marsha Pruitt, hostess; Stephanie Morgan, graduate advisor; Fonda Kirk, chaplain; Shirley Holt, historian; and Yolanda Woods, parliamentarian.
