Area Sports Briefs: LC women slip to 0-2

The Livingstone women’s basketball team fell to 0-2 with a 73-47 loss to Bloomsburg on Sunday at the Schwartz Center in Chester, Pa.

Kyala Searcy scored 23 points to lead the Blue Bears, who trailed 42-13 at halftime.

The Huskies (1-1) led 20-7 after 10 minutes and were up by as many as 36 points in the second half.

Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) started Richmond’s opener and had six points, three rebounds and a block.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) and Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) combined for 13 points as UNC Pembroke won its opener.

Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) scored four points and had three rebounds in Texas Tech’s loss to Texas State on Sunday.

College cross country

In her final college cross country race, Georgia Southern senior Rebecca Parker (West Rowan) had a PR in the 6K South Regional held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday.

Parker’s time was 22:10. She was Georgia Southern’s second runner.

Zachary Marchinko (Carson) and Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge) helped the Charlotte 49ers men’s team place sixth in Saturday’s 10K Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va.

  Zach Marchinko and  Cornwell finished 47th and 48th, respectively.

Marchinko ran a time of 30:32.1, which was just off his personal-best time, while Cornwell set a new 10K personal-best time of 30:33.4.

College football

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Virginia State University’s  Reggie Barlow  as the league’s coach of the year.

College volleyball

Catawba swept  Newberry in its final match of the season.

Catawba finished 6-19 and 4-16 in the SAC.

Abby Benton led the Indians with 10 kills and 11 digs. Jade Brooks added seven kills and 11 digs.

Rachel Stanford handed out 19 assists while recording four aces and nine digs. Allison Benton collected 15 digs to lead the defense.

College wrestling

Appalachian State’s Logan Durham (South Rowan) had a pin at 125 pounds in a win against Davidson.

Brandon Sloop (Carson) went undefeated at 174 pounds in the  37th Annual Pembroke Classic on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

College bowling

The Northern and Southern divisions of the CIAA  competed at B&B Bowling Lanes in Fayetteville over the weekend in the first big event of the season.

Men’s basketball

D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) hit a big 3-pointer and scored nine points in Newberry’s 71-56 win against Erwkine.

Malik Ford and Michael Bowman (both North Rowan) have helped J.C. Smith win its first two games.

Ford had six points and eight rebounds against Virginia-Wise, while Bowman, who is returning from a torn ACL, pulled down five boards.

YFL

The North Rowan Cavaliers won against the Granite-Faith Chargers, 21-14, in two overtimes to win the championship for grades 3-4.

In the championship for grades 5-6, the North Rowan Cavaliers topped the West Rowan Falcons, 28-14.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice on Sunday.

The team of Ralph & Pam Craver and Calvin Smith took first place.

The second-place team was  David Huneycutt, Azalee Story and Gene & Mary Seaford.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s varsity teams won season openers against Phoenix Academy of Greensboro.

The girls defeated the Phoenix 47-2.  Rachel McCullough scored 25 points.  Sutton Webb had 10 and Gianna Patella  scored 8.

Sacred Heart’s boys won 37-11.

Jalon Walker  led the way with 17 points and Connor Hennie had eight.  Ben Childress led in assists  and scored five points.
