Area Sports Briefs: East grad Porter making impact at Sewanee

Freshman defensive back Wesley Porter (East Rowan) is making an impact for a Sewanee team that is playing its most competitive football in a number of years.

Porter, a three-time All-Rowan County and All-South Piedmont Conference player, had another interception on Saturday. He also had a pass breakup and two tackles in a 48-42 home loss to Hendrix.

In five games, Porter has three interceptions, five breakups, a forced fumble and 25 tackles.

Donnell (DJ) Alexander made two tackles for N.C. Wesleyan in Saturday’s 17-7 loss to Ferrum.

Willie McCree (East Rowan), who saw action as a DB at Guilford, is now serving in the U.S. Army.

Former West Rowan receiver Brantley Horton, who graduated from the Naval Academy, was in attendance at West’s game on Friday. Horton is serving as a Marine Corps combat engineer officer and is stationed at Camp Lejeune.

  

Local golf

Jerry Harviel, longtime employee at Corbin Hills,  made a hole-in-one recently at  Ford’s Colony Country Club in Williamsburg, Va. Harviel’s ace came on the 109-yard No. 14 hole on the Blackheath Course. He used a 9-iron. Alan  Blankenship witnessed the feat.

Coll. cross country

In the Royals Challenge, hosted by Queens at McAlpine Park,  Catawba’s men were 14th, while Catawba’s women were 13th.

Queens won the men’s competition, while Lee won the women’s race.

Hannah Mercer led Catawba’s women in a 5K. She was timed ini 18:38.   Kyle Rhodes led the Catawba men. He clocked 26:32 on the 8K course.

Kellen Corson (A.L. Brown) ran 27:41 and was the third runner for UNC Pembroke in the Royals Challenge.

Nathan Zauner (West Rowan) started his college career at Methodist with a 28:02 in an 8K at Furman. He was fifth in Methodist’s invitational meet.

Coll. women’s golf

East Carolina’s Carley Cox (China Grove) hot 71-75-72 — 218 and tied for third in Pirate Collegiate Invitational. ECU’s Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) competed as an individual and shot 76-78-79 — 233. She tied for 41st.

Coll. men’s golf

A number of teams, including UNC Greensboro, return to action in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, which will be held today and tomorrow in Raleigh.

College volleyball

In Catawba’s loss to Queens on Friday, Morgan Hester (Carson) had 10 assists and six digs.

Catawba was swept by undefeated Wingate in Goodman Gym on Saturday. Rachel Stanford had seven kills, 11 digs and nine assists to lead Catawba (3-9, 1-7 SAC).   Allison Benton had 12 digs. Hester had 12 assists and six digs.

Catawba plays a SAC match at Coker on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Meredith’s Abby Lee (Salisbury) had four assists and eight digs in a sweep of Salem.

Brevard’s Hannah Elmore (Carson) totaled 18 kills, seven digs and three blocks in Saturday’s wins against LaGrange and Maryville.

Lynsey Corriher (South Rowan) helped Averett improve to 16-2 with wins against Meredith and Salem. She totaled 17 kills, five digs and three blocks.

Michaela White (Carson) had 14 assists and 16 digs for UNC Wilmington in a 3-1 loss to James Madison.

Winston-Salem State’s Makala Lytton (North Rowan) helped the Rams take CIAA matches with Bowie State and Virginia State. She had four kills and nine digs against Bowie and 18 digs and five aces against Virginia State.

  

College men’s soccer

Lander outscored Catawba to take a 6-3 decision  on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex.   Philipp Hollenhorst, Finley Carroll and Tobias Iriah scored for Catawba (1-6).    Evan Jeckells stopped five shots for the Indians.

Catawba hosts Queens on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

   Caleb Bratager’s golden goal in the 105th minute sent the Pfeiffer men’s soccer team to its third straight victory, a 2-1 triumph in double overtime over Covenant.

The goal was Bratager’s fifth of the season. Bratager has netted at least one goal in four straight matches.

Coll. women’s soccer

Kat Kelley assisted on goals by  Maddie Capel, Cayci Eaton and Tori Jackson, as Pfeiffer’s women won at Ferrum, 3-0.

Barton’s Megan Bolick (Carson) made three saves  and allowed two goals while playing 45 minutes in a 3-2 loss to Pfeiffer.

Bolick played 17 minutes and shared a shutout in goal in a 3-0 win against Southern Wesleyan.

Catawba fell to Georgia College, 3-1,  on Saturday afternoon at the Frock Soccer Complex.

Catawba (5-3) had a four-game winning streak stopped.  Shelby Vasich scored early for a 1-0 Catawba lead.

Catawba will host Queens in a conference match at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Prep girls golf

The Rowan County Championships will be conducted at McCanless  on Tuesday.

East Rowan has been winning North Piedmont Conference matches and is the favorite.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s boys and girls cross country teams defeated Statesville Montessori in a dual team meet at Salisbury Community Park on Thursday.

Leading the  boys was Chris Portillo with a time of 10:46.  Other leaders were Jacob Mills (11:32), Ethan Ott (11:37) and Abdul Eliwa (11:40).

Miles Abramson finished second overall for the girls with a time of 16:28.

She was followed by Kari Downs, Millie Wymbs and Cora Wymbs.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s varsity volleyball team lost to Immaculate Heart of Mary  25-8, 25-10, 25-12 and 25-18.

Against St. Leo’s Catholic, Sacred Heart won 25-15, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-11. Grace Blackwell served for 23 points.  Gianna Patella was a standout.

Sacred Heart’s younger girls lost to St. Leo’s 20-22, 20-17 and 20-13.

Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team (3-0-2) stayed undefeated with a 4-2 win against Ellis Middle.

John David Bonilla scored two  goals, while Sutton Webb and Colin Donaldson had a goal each.

Ben Childress, Luiz Avilez and Cooper Fleeman were leaders for the Dolphins.  Jalon Walker was outstanding in goal.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee team won against North Hills, 9-0.

Izzy Banish and Simon Mueller had hat tricks.

Alex Robinette, Harrison Banish and Nick Loeblein scored a goal apiece.

Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team beat North Davie, 8-1, but lost to South Davie, 5-4.

Standouts were Sutton Webb, Rachel McCullough and Kyna Zaldivar.
