Area sports briefs: South volleyball, West tennis win

South Rowan (11-6, 9-3) swept Oak Grove in Central Carolina Conference volleyball on Tuesday.
Kira Rymer had 13 kills, 10 digs and six aces; Janiya Downs had 12 kills; Jenna Strickland had 13 digs, and Michaela Hallman had 27 assists.
South’s jayvees also swept. Lele Littlejohn had three aces. Kendall Walter had three aces and three kills. Annay Rymer had four assists and three kills.

Salisbury (6-8, 5-8 CCC) was swept at Central Davidson in Tuesday’s CCC action. Mary McCullough had five kills and four blocks. Lila Harry had four kills. Kaya Twitty had 10 assists.

In the North Piedmont Conference, East Rowan was swept by league-leader North Iredell. Olivia Wright had six kills and two blocks for the Mustangs. Leah Wyrick had four kills and eight assists. Paige Butler had three kills. Baleigh Hill had six digs.
East’s jayvees were swept. Landrie Hess had three kills, while Zoe Larson and Caroline Houpe had two kills each.

West Rowan lost the first set on Tuesday, 25-20, but came back to win three straight against Statesville.
Second-place Carson stayed one game behind North Iredell by sweeping South Iredell on the road.
Prep tennis
East Rowan lost to North Iredell, 5-4, in North Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.
(3) Mia Graham and (4) Kristen Brady won in singles for East (4-5, 3-4). Graham/Brady won the No. 2 doubles match, while Lauren Weisensel/Angel Scialdone won at No. 1 doubles.

West Rowan won, 9-0, at home against Statesville in NPC tennis on Tuesday.
(1) Payton Holt, (2) Madison Smith, (3) Tabby Landy and (4) Skylar Jahnke won singles matches for the Falcons (5-4, 4-3 NPC). Mira White and Kelsie Crider won by forfeit.
West’s winning doubles teams were Jahnke/White and Haley Foster/Gracie Wise. Doubles court No. 3 was a forfeit.
West will host East Rowan on Thursday.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s women’s tennis team rolled against Pfeiffer, 9-0, on Tuesday in Misenheimer. It was the season opener for both teams.

Catawba’s volleyball team (3-7, 1-5 SAC) was swept by Anderson on Tuesday. Micah Ensor had nine kills. Rachel Stanford had 20 assists and 14 digs.
Catawba hosts Queens on Friday.

Catawba’s men finished eighth in the King Invitational at the Country Club of Bristol.
Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) shot a career-low 69 on Tuesday and finished 11th at 143. Trey Burton and Wes Cline had 1-over 71s on in the final round to tie for 22nd on 146.
7th-grade football
China Grove won against North Rowan, 50-20, as D’Arrion Cuthbertson scored four touchdowns. He had runs of 68, 46 and 4 yards and a 98-yard interception return.
Cam Burleyson scored on a 5-yard run. Landon Hughes had a 40-yard TD run, and Emory Taylor had a 27-yard TD. Edwin Rodriguez kicked four PATS. Defensive standouts were Cuthbertson, Taylor, Burleyson and Garrett Christy.
