Area Sports Briefs: Porter makes strong college debut

Sewanee freshman DB Wesley Porter (East Rowan) made 13 tackles, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and had three pass breakups in his college football debut on Saturday.

Sewanee won against Kenyon, 45-20.

Porter’s forced fumble  was one of the key plays of the game, creating a two-touchdown swing. He punched the ball out on Sewanee’s 2-yard line and a teammate  returned it 98 yards for a score.

Prep football

North Stanly’s Cameron Davis rushed for a school-record 404 yards and six TDs in a 56-21 win against West Stanly on Monday.

Sacred Heart sports

  Sacred Heart tied Salisbury Academy, 5-5, in soccer.

John David Bonilla had three goals for the Dolphins, with Ben Childress and Colin Donaldson scoring a goal each.  Outstanding play was turned in by Gray Goodman, John Sentilles and AJ Flynn.

Sacred Heart soccer won against Concordia, 4-1.  Childress scored two goals, while  Daniel McKie and  Bonilla had one each.  The Dolphins’ defense was led by Kevin Nguyen, Bryce Mason and James Holland.

Sacred Heart’s volleyball team won  25-15, 18-25 and 18-16 against Salisbury Academy.   Grace Blackwell led the offense with 13 service points and Sophia Malloy had 10.

Mabel Harrison, Gianna Patella and Ella Trainor led the defense.

Sacred Heart lost in jayvee volleyball to Salisbury Academy, 25-17 and 25-13.

  Ella Cooler served for seven points, while Ellie Walters had four.

In a 25-8 and 25-9 loss to Tri-City,   Cooler, Lauren Childress and Emma Bloom led the team.

Local golf

In another lively battle of the McCanless Couples, Paul Hill, Mary and Gene Seaford were the victors.

The team of Susan Houston, Harry Owen and JJ & Susan Wydner came in second.  Susan Houston had the longest putt.

Intimidators

Lakewood’s Austin Listi hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 3-2, on Labor Day afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.

The  Intimidators (68-69)  will face the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the playoffs. The series starts in Greensboro on Wednesday. Kannapolis will host Game 2 on Friday.
