Work was in full gear Thursday as crews began tearing down the walls of the former First Bank building in the 200 block of West Innes Street. A track hoe has been slowly breaking up the 1973 building from the back side, which was reduced to rubble Thursday. The property is part of a project by the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation to bring a downtown park to the 3.5-acre block bounded by Innes, Church, Fisher and Jackson streets, with the historic Bell Tower as a focal point.
