Area Sports Briefs: North, Carson get JV football wins

Quarterback Javon Smith led North Rowan to a 20-6 win against Salisbury in jayvee football on Thursday.

Smith rushed for 95 yards on 11 carries and completed 4 of 7 passes for  76 yards.

Smith threw a TD pass to Ty’shon Sifford. Khoreem Miller had a rushing TD.

Bryan Lawson led the North defense with nine tackles.

Carson won against South Rowan, 19-6, on Thursday at South.

Cameron “CP” Pyle broke a 32-yard scoring run to put Carson on top, and Alex London’s 5-yard TD pass to Jake Harris made it 12-0.

Michael Gonsalves scored on a 1-yard run for the Cougars. Juan Espinoza kicked a PAT and intercepted two passes.

Jake Nichols and Ben Blumenthal were leaders for the Carson defense.

Intimidators

  Gavin Sheets drove in three runs to power the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-0 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.

Three Kannapolis hurlers combined on a one-hitter.

Kannapolis starts a series at Hagerstown tonight.

Prep tennis

South Rowan won against North Rowan, 7-2, on Thursday and is off to a 2-1 start.

Earlier, South won against East Davidson, 8-1, in CCC play and fell to Ledford, 6-3.

Kristen Minehart, Kaitlyn McCombs, Lauren Shell, Jamie Minehart are returning players who won against North Rowan.

Prep volleyball

East Rowan (1-1) won at  North Stanly, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21 on Thursday.

Olivia Wright had nine kills, five aces and five blocks. Leah Wyrick had eight kills and 10 assists. Leah Mesimer had five kills and 12 assists. Baileigh Hill had 17 digs.

“We played much better today than in our first match,” East coach Sandy Lytton said.

East’s jayvees lost to North Stanly. Hannah Larson had six kills, and Emma Collins had three aces.

South Rowan lost to Mount Pleasant, 3-2, on Thursday.

South (2-1) got 39 assists from Michaela Hallman. Janiya Downs had 22 kills and 10 digs.Kira Rymer had 16 kills and 12 digs. Jenna Strickland had 27 digs.

South’s jayvees lost to Mount Pleasant, 2-1.

Anna Rymer had 12 assists and five kills. Kendall Walter had eight kills. Sarai  Benitez had 26 digs. Jessi Rollins had 21 digs.

Carson won against West Davidson, 25-20, 24-26, 25-12 and 25-16 on Thursday in China Grove.

Carson (2-1) won against Porter Ridge on Wednesday.

Local golf

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr shot 69-74-74 in the American Junior Golf Association All-Star at The Club at Irish Creek.

Barr finished seventh and is a qualifier for the  Joe Cheves Junior Invitational Tournament  on Aug. 26-27.

East Rowan’s Austin Miller tied for 40th. He shot 75-83-74.

College football

North Carolina A&T senior offensive lineman Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) is on the preseason HBCU All-America team.

NCHSAA

The latest NCHSAA Hall of Fame class includes Coach James  Biggerstaff from Belmont; Coach Allen Brown from Thomasville, Coach Dave Elder from Hickory; Robert  McRae of Kings Mountain; Coach Donnie Simpson from Elizabeth City; Coach Dave Thomas from Goldsboro, and sportswriter Earl Vaughan, Jr. from Fayetteville.

Coach Herb Sampsel from Statesville will be inducted posthumously.
