Area Sports Briefs: Randolph wins regional, heads to World Series

Randolph County Post 45 pounded Florida, 15-2, on Sunday and won the Southeast Regional.

Randolph had been runner-up three times in the last four seasons.

Randolph (38-8), which beat Rowan two out of three to win the Area III championship series, has won 33 of its last 35 games.

“I feel they improved in the first two rounds and then took another step when we beat Rowan,” Randolph coach Ronnie Pugh told the Asheboro Courier Tribune. “That was a huge confidence step for us. It gave us a big boost to beat a team like that.”

Dawson Painter pitched six innings Sunday.  Ryan Hill homered and had three hits. Trevor Marsh drove in three runs on Sunday and eight in the tournament. Marsh batted .632 and was named regional MVP.

Catawba College catcher Cameron Morrison plays for Randolph and will be in the World Series in Shelby.

In pool play, Randolph debuts Thursday night at 8:15 against Hopewell, N.J. Post 339, the winner of the Mid-Alantic Regional.

Also in the World Series are Shrewsbury (Mass.) Post 397,  Bryant (Ark.) Post 298, Midland (Mich.) Post 165, Creighton Prep (Neb.), Lewiston (Idaho) Post 13 and Henderson (Nev.) Post 40.

Prep softball

Carson’s Jess Freeze has committed to Greensboro College. The infielder drove in 11 runs for the Cougars last season.

Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators struggled offensively in a 7-0 loss at Greensboro on Sunday.

Kannapolis (58-53) hosts Greenville tonight.

Local golf

Will Fowler made a hole-in-one at the Country Club of Salisbury. Fowler used a 5-iron on the 172-yard No. 17 hole. It was his first ace.

Round 2 will be on Tuesday at Warrior.

  The event is 72 holes of stroke play and has a field of 158 players.

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice.

The team of Azalee Story, David Huneycutt, Harry Owen and Jan Godwin took first place.  Walt Kincaid, Terrol Kendall and Gene and Mary Seaford took second. Kincaid won closest to the pin. Kendall won longest putt.
