From staff reports

Home runs by Taylor Walton and Nicole Fleming powered Rowan County’s Legion softball team to an 11-8 win against Montgomery County on Tuesday at Carson.

Teams normally play two five-inning games, but this time they played one seven-inning contest.

Walton knocked in four runs, and Rowan  finished the regular season, 6-5, and in second place in the Central Division.

“We had more energy and were more aggressive at the plate tonight,” Rowan manager Todd McNeely said. “As a team, it was the best we’ve hit. We got hits and runs up and down the lineup.”

Intimidators

Former A.L. Brown and Charlotte 49ers running back Kalif Phillips will throw out the first pitch before the Kannapolis Intimidators 7:05 p.m. game on July 20.

The Green Bay Packers signed Phillips as an undrafted rookie free agent in May. Packers training camp opens on July 27.

Phillips will be available to fans for pictures and autographs during the game, which will also be an Intimidators Thirsty Thursday.

Phillips set 49ers school records for career rushing yards (4,020), touchdowns (43), rushing touchdowns (41) and 100-yard rushing games (15).

As a senior at A.L. Brown in 2012, he piled up more than 2,500 rushing yards and had a seven-TD game.

Local golf

Calvin Smith made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Tuesday.  He aced the 135-yard No. 10 hole with a 6 Hybrid.   Witnessing  Smith’s third career ace was Ralph Carver.
