Area Sports Briefs: East Jr. Legion wins playoff opener

Jake Hunter pitched a no-hitter as East Rowan’s undefeated Junior Legion baseball team won against Stokes County, 4-0, in the first round of the playoffs.

Hunter struck out eight in Saturday’s game at Staton Field. He  got the job done with 84 pitches.

East (21-0) got doubles from Corbin Moss and Wayne Mize and RBI singles from Jake Davis and J.D. Basinger.

East will try to clinch the best-of-three series tonight at West Stokes High in King at 7 p.m.

West Forsyth Blue topped West Rowan, 6-2, in the first game of their  playoff series in Clemmons.

West Rowan will look to even the series tonight at home at 7 p.m.

The Cary Bulls topped Mocksville, 3-1 in the first game of their series. Game 2 is today in Mocksville.

Concord and Southeast Guilford were battling 0-0 in the bottom of the fifth when their game was suspended by weather.

They’ll finished the suspended game and then play Game 2 today at SEG.

Wood bat leagues

Catawba pitcher Clay Young, who hurls for the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms, is on  the Coastal Plain League All-Star roster.

Intimidators

Luis Martinez pitched into the seventh inning and recorded his second consecutive quality start, but the Kannapolis Intimidators fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds 4-2 in 12 innings on Saturday night at Intimidators Stadium.

Kannapolis has dropped five in a row.
