Area Sports Briefs: Qualifying conducted for Rowan Masters

Qualifying rounds for the upcoming Rowan Masters were played at Warrior Golf Club on Saturday.

The top 31 scorers from Saturday will join defending champion Andrew Purcell for match play when the 15th annual Rowan Masters is contested on June 23-25.

Purcell will be the top seed and will take on the No. 32 seed in the first round.

West Rowan won against Carson, 3-1, in a league game on Saturday.

Payne Stolsworth was the winning pitcher and had two hits and two RBIs.

The teams also played a non-league game. Carson won, 7-2.

Wood bat leagues

Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) raised his record to 2-0 with the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks after pitching a 3-1 win on Thursday and striking out seven in six innings.

Shepherd hit five homers on Saturday night to win a home run derby.

Intimidators

Kannapolis lost to West Virginia, 6-1, on Saturday and goes into today’s final game of the first half tied for first place.

Kannapolis is 38-29, while Lakewood is 39-30. Greensboro and Hagerstown are one game back.
