CHINA GROVE — Rowan County deputies are investigating a string of recent car break-ins in China Grove.

On Wednesday, four car break-ins were reported in the area of Lipe and Stirewalt roads.

Residents of Weaver Road, Lipe Road, Stirewalt Road and Whisper Drive told deputies that someone had rifled through unlocked cars late Tuesday evening. They reported several items missing.

A resident of Weaver Road reported that a company-issued Dell laptop computer was stolen from his unlocked truck. Later that day, however, the man said his laptop had been found. The man said he received a call from an unknown person who said he found the laptop. He met the caller at a gas station in New London to retrieve it, along with a bag and calipers that also had been taken.

A family on Whisper Drive reported that two unlocked vehicles were broken into. The couple reported that $6 in change and dollar bills was taken from their Chevrolet Impala, along with a bottle of the prescription medicine Klonopin. The other car had been rifled through, but nothing appeared to be missing, they said.

And a man on Lipe Road reported that his wallet was taken from his Jeep Cherokee. The wallet contained his Social Security card, a State Employees’ Credit Union debit card and about $100 in cash. The man told deputies he usually locks his car but was unsure if he did so Tuesday evening.

A handbag was reported stolen from a vehicle on Weaver Road but was later found in a neighbor’s driveway off Stirewalt Road.

None of the residences had video surveillance, and no suspects have been identified.
