Area Sports Briefs: Carson Jr. Legion wins first league game

The Carson Junior Legion baseball team won its first league game on Sunday, rolling 7-0 against the Davidson County Hawgs at Holt-Moffitt Field.

Cole Hales pitched four innings for the win, and Tyler Thompson (fifth and sixth) and Nolan Eudy (seventh) finished the shutout.

Logan Rogers had a two-run single and a sac fly to lead the offense.Ryan Street had a two-run single.   Jake Harris had a double.

Carson plays at Northwest Cabarrus High tonight against the Kannapolis Cardinals.

West Rowan beat the Davidson County Warriors  on Saturday, 5-1, in West’s first league game.

  Payne Stolsworth pitched five innings  for the win.  He struck out five.

Mo Salazar pitched the sixth and seventh for West.

Michael Molenda, Daniel Sell and Stolsworth  had two hits each.

West is at home against Salisbury tonight.

Legion softball

Rowan County will field  a team in an American Legion-sponsored girls fast-pitch softball league.

Games will be played at Carson High, starting with a doubleheader against Stanly County on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Minor leagues

Micker Adolfo mashed his fourth home run in nine games as the Kannapolis Intimidators marched to a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.   Kannapolis improved to 33-27 and  will finish the four-game series tonight at Delmarva.

Local golf

In McCanless Couples golf,  Bev and Ty Cobb and Susan and JJ Wydner won the day on a scorecard playoff. Azalee Story, David Huneycutt and Jan Godwin came in second.   Story won closest to the pin, while  Bev Cobb had the longest putt.

College hoops

The Newberry men’s basketball team will open the season with an exhibition game at Miami.

Newberry president Morrie Scherrens worked with Miami coach Jim Larranaga at George Mason, and that led to the matchup.

Wood bat leagues

Ross Hoffner (Davie County, Montreat) of the Mooresville Spinners went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs  and scored twice in a 15-5 win against the Fuquay-Varina Twins in a Carolina-Virginia League game. Hoffner has played in 11 games and is batting .405.

Wells Fargo Cup

Hickory Ridge won the Wells Fargo Cup for overall athletic excellence in the South Piedmont Conference.  Conference Standings: Hickory Ridge 730, Cox Mill 720, Jay M. Robinson 540, Carson 537.5, Concord 490, West Rowan 485, Northwest Cabarrus 450, Central Cabarrus 447.5, East Rowan 427.5, South Rowan 382.5.
