Area Sports Briefs: Erwin, Southeast advance in baseball tournament

Top-seeded Erwin beat Mooresville, 12-2, in a semifinal game in the middle school conference tournament.

The winning pitcher was Cameron Padgett.  He pitched six innings, walked two and had three strikeouts.  Padgett went 2-for- 4 with two runs scored.

  Griffen Warden went 3-for-4, homered and drove in two runs.  Garrison Kepley went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Kane Kepley went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Aiden Kennedy drove in a run for Mooresville.

No. 2 seed Southeast rolled  against No. 3 seed West Rowan, 14-3.

Winning pitcher Dylan Driver threw five innings, striking out five and walking three. He went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs and two doubles.

Cameron Pyle hit a three-run homer and a two-run homer. Braden Graham went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

J.D. Basinger homered for West and drove in three runs.

Erwin takes on Southeast at 4 p.m. today at Corriher-Lipe. The teams split two high-scoring games in the regular season.

Prep softball

Davie County’s softball team exited the 4A softball playoffs on Tuesday with a 5-2, third-round loss at Richmond County.

Coach Dawn Lowery’s War Eagles finished 22-5.

Richmond took a 5-0 in the first three innings. Davie got single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Davie had five hits, with K’lea Parks, Bridgett Tierney, McKenzie Barneycastle, Makenzie Smith and Sierra Ferguson getting one each. Olivia Boger struck out nine.

Prep golf

WHISPERING PINES — Cannon School finished second in the two-day NCISAA 3A championship at the Country Club of Whispering Pines here Monday and Tuesday.

Cannon’s 582 was 13 strokes behind Raleigh Ravenscroft’s 569.

Ravenscroft may have won the tournament with a sparking first-round score of 280. Cannon shot a 294 on Monday and then rebounded with a 288 on Tuesday. Ravenscroft shot a 289 during the second round.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot 77-78 (155) for Cannon, to finish 18th individually.

Following Ravenscroft and Cannon were Charlotte Latin (618), Durham Academy (620) and Charlotte Christian (623).

Low C flight player was Ralph Luther with a net of 64.78. Low D flight player was Steve Kale with a net of 67.50. Bobby Bryant had an eagle two on the par 4 No. 13 hole.

Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 74; Buddy Barger, 82, shot a 79; Lou Manning, 83, shot a 73; Clayton  Steele, 85 shot an 84; and O.J. Chandler 87, shot a 77.
