Area Sports Briefs: East falls to Marvin Ridge

Marvin Ridge has won the last two 3Abaseball state championships and is a threat to three-peat.

The Mavericks clobbered East Rowan, 11-1, in five innings on Friday. Marvin Ridge scored two runs in the first and three in the second to take charge.

John Owen had two hits for the Mustangs. (16-11). Chandler Blackwelder went 1-for-2. East had five hits.

Will Brown took the loss.

Owen wasn’t able to pitch. He’s  been experiencing elbow soreness, although he expects to be fully healthy at some point this summer for the Rowan County Legion team.

Jason Cornatzer, a 6-foot-6 right-hander headed to Appalachian State,  was the winning pitcher. ECU signee Jake Kuchmaner drove in three runs.

Marvin Ridge (23-5) has four Division I signees.

Defending state champ North Davidson advanced in the 4A  playoffs with a 2-1 win against Hough.

In second-round 3A games, Carson is at Crest at 7 p.m., and South Rowan is at Ledford at 7 p.m.

In 4A, A.L. Brown is at Providence at 5 p.m.

Prep tennis

In the individual state tournament in Raleigh, two Salisbury doubles teams were eliminated Friday in first-round matches.

Sean Archer/Jander Rodas lost to Carrboro’s Jason Wykoff/Andre Javen, 6-2, 6-0.

Roarke Burton/Adam Drye lost to Science & Math’s Josh Abrams and Vincent Xia, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

Prep track and field

North Rowan’s girls finished second in Friday’s 2A Midwest Regional in Monroe.

Top-four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet.

North’s Payton Russell won the 200 (25.68 seconds) and 400 (58.25) and helped the Cavaliers place second in the  (4:17.90).

Lakayla Birst won the high jump (5 feet).

Janiah Hall took third in the long jump (15 feet, 5 inches). Heavenly Robinson was fourth in the 400 (1:02.97) and fifth in the 200 (27.95).  Chevy Blaire was second in the shot put (36-8) and discus (111-7).

Salisbury’s NiTavia Corpening placed fourth in the long jump (15-3.75).

Leah Cressler was fifth in the 1600 (5:52) and seventh in the 800 (2:38.75).

Tyrone Johnson was the top performer for Salisbury’s boys. He was sixth in the 100 (11.53).

North Rowan’s Daylnn Cuthbertson was the state qualifier with a third-place finish in the triple jump (40-10.5). He was fifth in the high jump (5-10) and long jump (20-0.5.).

College softball

Pfeiffer stayed unbeaten in the Southeast Regional  on Friday, beating Young  Harris, 2-1. Down 1-0, Pfeiffer scored twice in the fifth. Kaleigh Troutman (East Rowan) had two hits for the Falcons. Stephanie Fortner had the go-ahead hit. Caitlin Christian pitched a complete game. Pfeiffer takes on host  Armstrong today at 11 a.m.
