Salisbury to host N.C. Senior Democrats Convention

SALISBURY — Livingstone College on Saturday will be the site of the 2017 N.C. Senior Democrats Convention.

The convention, which starts at 9 a.m., will include the election of officers, speakers, workshops and other party business. It will be held in the building used for Livingstone College’s hospitality management and culinary arts programs at 530 Jake Alexander Blvd.

Rowan County Democratic Party Chairman Geoffrey Hoy says he expects as many as 75 people to attend.

Scheduled speakers include Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works; Wayne Goodwin, chairman of the N.C. Democratic Party; and state Sen. Jeff Jackson, a Democrat who represents the 37th District.

Altman and Goodwin, the former state commissioner of insurance, are scheduled to speak about insurance and Social Security shortly after the start of the convention. Jackson is scheduled to speak after lunch.

During lunch, YouNique Starz Dance Group is scheduled to perform.

Activities are also scheduled for Friday, Hoy said. Catawba College Provost and politics professor Michael Bitzer will speak at 2 p.m. about demography. About 8 p.m., Bill Franklin, secretary of the N.C. Senior Democrats, will speak about gerrymandering and redistricting.

Presentations on Friday will be at the hotel where many conventioneer are staying, Holiday Inn Express.

Hoy said he will encourage convention goers to eat and shop locally during their stay in Salisbury.
