Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball eliminated from tournament
From staff reports
Catawba’s top-seeded baseball team exited the South Atlantic Conference tournament on Sunday with a pair of losses.
The 20th-ranked Indians lost to No. 2 Lincoln Memorial, 10-6, in a winners bracket game in the afternoon in Kodak, Tenn.
Bryce Fowler had three hits and three RBIs. Jeremy Simpson had three RBIs, including a single that put Catawba ahead in the sixth, 4-3. Malachi Hanes had two doubles.
Connor Johnson started on the mound and left in the sixth in a tight game. Clay Young took the loss.
Catawba lost another game late Sunday — and early Monday morning — falling to seventh-seeded Carson-Newman, 13-8.
Bryan Ketchie started and took the loss. Chance Bowden had three hits, Hanes drove in two runs, and Jacob Nester went 3-for-3.
Catawba (37-14) overcame an early 4-0 deficit with a four-run second, but the Eagles just kept scoring and finally took control with a three-run seventh.
Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman will play for the championship today. Carson-Newman will have to beat Lincoln Memorial twice to get the SAC’s automatic regional bid.

Dylan Goodman (South Rowan) pitched well in relief for the Falcons.
Top-seeded Pfeiffer lost to No. 3 North Greenville, 4-0, in the Conference Carolinas championship game.
Sydney Poole (East Rowan) relieved in the second inning and finished the game with another strong effort but got no decision. Poole allowed one earned run.

George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 69-78-74 — 221 and tied for 22nd in the Atlantic 10 Championships.

Crucitti was saluted as he stood on the Red Sox dugout as part of Boston’s Hats Off To Heroes program.
Crucitti is a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division headquartered at Fort Bragg.
Alec Hansen took a no hitter into the sixth inning, but Lakewood tagged the Intimidators starter with a hard-luck loss, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood.
Kannapolis (11-12) dropped its final two games of the week-long road trip after winning three of the team’s first four games on the road this week.
Hansen (1-2) opened with five no-hit innings. The 6-foot-7 Kannapolis pitcher allowed one hit in six innings.
Kannapolis opens a seven-game home stand on Tuesday with a three-game series against the Augusta GreenJackets (San Francisco Giants) and former Catawba star Will Albertson.
