Area Sports Briefs: Rowan players on All-SPC teams for winter sports

All-South Piedmont Conference teams were announced by the league.

In boys basketball, sophomore Wendell Moore Jr. of 3A state champion Cox Mill was named SPC Player of the Year. Cox Mill’s Jody Barbee was named SPC Coach of the Year.

West Rowan junior Caleb Mauldin and seniors Paris Hillie and Kortez Weeks were named to the All-SPC team.

Carson juniors Jamarius Hairston and Jailen Willians made the team.

In SPC girls basketball,  Central Cabarrus senior Mahaley Holit was named SPC Player of the Year.

Tolonda Simmons, who led Hickory Ridge to a state runner-up finish, was named SPC Coach of the Year.

Rowan players who made the All-SPC team were West Rowan junior Egypt Alexander, Carson junior Olivia Gabriel, Carson sophomore McKenzie Gadson, South Rowan sophomore Janiya Downs and  South Rowan junior Tazah Hardin.

In SPC wrestling, Cox Mill’s Cade Davis was named SPC Player of the Year, while Hickory Ridge’s Eric Rees was named SPC Coach of the Year.

East Rowan’s Max Wall, Carson’s Cameron Rayfield and Austin Cain, and South Rowan’s Jon Hunt made the All-SPC team.

In swimming, Cox Mill’s Jamie Burch was named  SPC Coach of the Year.

Concord’s Robbie Epler and Cox Mill’s Cathleen Rogers were named to the  players of the year.

Prep softball

South Rowan dropped its first SPC game on Tuesday, losing to Cox Mill, 17-7.

South got three hits each from  Autumn McKeon, Anna Blume and Mataya Reynolds.

Brooke Lowery had two hits for the Raiders (3-2, 3-1), including a homer.

Cox Mill and Central Cabarrus are undefeated in the league.

Davie romped against West Forsyth in CPC action, 14-2, on Tuesday. Makenzie Smith had four hits and six RBIs. Olivia Boger struck out eight Titans.

A.L. Brown (7-0) stayed undefeated with a 15-0 win against Salisbury (0-4).

Prep baseball

Most games were postponed by wet grounds and cold temperatures on Tuesday, but Central Cabarrus beat Concord, 15-0, for a win in the SPC.

Cameron Kepley fanned 10 Spiders in five innings and allowed two hits.

Jessi Woolard had four RBIs, while Cameron Kepley had four hits.

East Rowan outfielder Chandler Blackwelder has committed to UNC Pembroke and plans to sign in April.

Salisbury already has postponed the game scheduled for tonight with Trinity.  Carson-West Rowan and  South Rowan-Cox Mill were pushed back to Thursday. East Rowan-Hickory Ridge was rescheduled for today.

Prep soccer

South Rowan lost to Cox Mill, 4-1, in SPC action on Tuesday. Madison Henry scored her 11th goal of the young season for South. Taylor Mauldin played well for the Raiders.

College baseball

Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had two RBIs and Matt Vernon (Davie) had two hits in Appalachian State’s 9-5 win against N.C. A&T.

Prep tennis

Salisbury tennis won 8-1 over West Davidson on Tuesday.   Winning in singles   were Ethan  McGee, Roarke Burton, Jander Rodas, Sean Archer, Adam Drye and Paul Weitz.   Winning in doubles were Burton/Archer  and Weitz/Rodas. Salisbury will play Newton Conover Thursday.
