Area Sports Briefs: Wrestlers advance

In first-round action in the state individual wrestling tournament in Greensboro, a number of local wrestlers opened with wins.

Salisbury’s Kevion Chunn (195) won by pin. Mark Wright (152) won a major decision and Jibri Cowan won a decision.

Timmy Boyd (126) and Chris Moore (285) dropped first-round matches.

In the 3A Championships, Carson wrestlers went 3-for-3 in the first round. Josh Vega (113) and Bailey Rayfield (160) took decisions, while Cameron Rayfield  (152) claimed a “sudden victory” decision in an overtime period.

East Rowan’s Max Wall  won a decision at 170, but Jeffrey Burrell (138) dropped his first-round match.

South Rowan’s Logan Lambert won by pin at 120.

In the 4A Championships, A.L. Brown’s Isaiah Johnson (160) won his opeing match by pin.

At 138, the Wonders’ Daniel Cruz lost a decision to Davie County’s Will Allen.

Besides Allen, Davie’s Anthony Olmedo (285) and Jesse Carter (195) won first-round matches. Both had pins.

Davie’s Hunter Smith (113), Hunter Strickland (152), Kyle McCune (170) and Jesus Olmedo (220) lost first-round matches.

College football

Former A.L. Brown defensive lineman Dantrell Barkley, now at Independence Community College in Kansas, has been offered by South Carolina.

College baseball

St. Andrews freshman Lee Poteat (West Rowan) is off to a great start, with a .480 batting average and a .580 on-base percentage in his first nine games.

Poteat has eight RBIs, four steals and four triples.

Jake Pritchard (North Rowan) got his first college  hit and RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne in a romp against Emmanuel.

Men’s basketball

Tre Williams (Carson) had 13 points in Thursday’s   69-65 win against Benedict.

Forest Trail Academy edged Davidson County Community College, 91-88.

Markeise Crutchfield scored 29 points for the Storm. David Tripp (A.L. Brown) had 16 points and eight rebounds.

College indoor track

Livingstone’s Kelvin Johnson was the shot put winner in the CIAA Championships.

Johnson threw a career best 47 feet, 7.26 inches.

Women’s basketball

Amy Steller (Davie County) scored 17 points and had six rebounds as Guilford beat Randolph, 70-62.

Alex Allen (Carson) had nine points and six rebounds for Lynchburg in a 72-49 win against Roanoke.

  

Prep basketball

Jarren Cottingham scored 26 points as third-seeded Hickory Ridge rallied to beat Robinson, 66-61, in a semifinal in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament on Thursday at Cox Mill.

Lavar Batts Jr. scored 21 points for second-seeded Robinson.

Hickory Ridge plays top seed Cox Mill for the championship tonight at 7:30 p.m on the Chargers’ floor.

In a Central Carolina Conference girls semifinal on Thursday, Brooke Anders scored 21 points to lead second-seeeded  East Davidson to a 48-37 win against third-seeded West Davidson.

East Davidson had a 25-0 run in the first half. West Davidson rallied in the second half to make it closer.

Olivia Sharpe scored 14 points for the Green Dragons.

East Davidson plays top-seeded Salisbury in the  tournament championship game tonight at 6 p.m. at Lexington.

North Stanly’s boys won against Union Academy, 78-42, in the  Uwharrie Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

Cameron Lee scored 36 points for the Comets,  and Bryson Childress scored 19.

North Stanly (18-7) won its 16th straight game and advanced to tonight’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against Albemarle at Pfeiffer.

Albemarle won against Queens Grant, 76-49, in the other semifinal.

7th-grade hoops

West Rowan’s boys won against Corriher-Lipe, 49-47. Spenser Harrison led the Bulldogs (4-6) with 14 points. Camden Stamper had 10 points, Isiah Tenor had nine, and Athan Gill scored eight.

Jackson Black led Corriher-Lipe with 23 points.

West Rowan will next play undefeated Mooresville on Tuesday at West.

Erwin’s girls stayed undefeated with a 39-17 win against North Rowan.

Erwin (10-0) was led by Katelyn Griggs with 15 pts. Hannah Isley scored seven, and Madie Honeycutt scored six.

College tennis

Catawba’s women’s tennis team won against Pfeiffer, 8-1.

Catawba swept the singles matches to improve to 7-1.

The Falcons fell to 1-2.

Prep baseball

A scrimmage is set for Carson on Saturday:

10 a.m. — Carson vs. South Iredell

12:30 — South Iredell vs. West Rowan

3 — Carson vs. North Rowan

5:15 — North Rowan vs. West Rowan
