Area Sports Briefs: Sherrill lighting it up

Augusta senior Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) came into Monday’s games as the No. 3 scorer in Division II with 26.1 points per game.

Sherrill was held to 18 points on Monday, but he made the game-winning free throws in an 80-78 Peach Belt victory against UNC Pembroke.

Claflin’s Tre Williams (Carson) had eight points and nine rebounds in Monday’s 49-48 win against Tuskegee.

Pfeiffer leads Division II in scoring with 105.3 points per game. Newberry is second at 100.5.

Michael Connor Jr.  (North Rowan) hit four 3-pointers on Monday in Western Nebraska CC’s 84-73 win vs. Northwest Kansas Tech.

Catawba returns to action on Wednesday with a home game against unbeaten Queens, following the women’s contest.

Livingstone plays at home against CIAA opponent Elizabeth City State on Thursday, following a women’s contest.

Women’s basketball

UNC Pembroke’s Avery Locklear (South Rowan)  made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in a 73-64 win against Belmont Abbey and had six points in Monday’s 68-62 victory against UNC Pembroke.

Lynchburg’s Alex Allen (Carson) shot 3-for-3 from the field and scored seven points in a 77-61 win against Stevenson.

Guilford’s Amy Steller (Davie) had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists in a 92-87 win against Husson University.

College wrestling

UNC Pembroke’s Brandon Sloop placed fourth at 165 pounds in the Citrus Invitational Tournament in Florida.

NFL

Pittsburgh’s Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had two tackles, one for loss, in Sunday’s 27-24 win against Cleveland.

College football

Keion Adams (Salisbury) had two tackles, one for loss, in Western Michigan’s 24-16 loss to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.

Prep football

East Rowan defensive back Wesley Porter has committed to Sewanee (The University of the South) in Tennessee.

The Sewanee Tigers compete in the Division III  Southern Athletic Association.

Porter was a three-time All-South Piedmont Conference and All-Rowan County pick.

Prep hoops

North Rowan plays at North Stanly tonight.

Mooresville’s Noah Allen scored his 1,000th career point during the Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic.

Carson junior  Olivia Gabriel has 967 career points and is closing in on becoming the program’s fourth 1,000-point scorer.

Carson plays at home against Cox Mill on Friday.

Both West Rowan teams have a big week. The Falcons are at home against Robinson and Lavar Batts Jr. on Wednesday. Headed to VCU, Batts Jr. is rated as the state’s top senior.

West will host Hickory Ridge on Friday.

Hickory Ridge’s girls are undefeated.
