LANDIS — The Landis Board of Aldermen Monday approved the permanent closure of the 100 block of East Round Street.

The closure was discussed at the board’s November meeting, and Monday the town opened the floor to a public hearing — but no one chose to comment.

Town Manager Reed Linn explained that the road gives access to the old Corriher Mill, which is now closed. The road, a dead end, has also been closed. The old mill is the only piece of property which would be affected by the closure.

Mayor Pro-Tem Dorland Abernathy made a motion to close the road, while maintaining sufficient right-of-way for town utility lines. The motion passed unanimously.

In other business, the town:

  • Will hold a public hearing Jan. 9 for the re-zoning of two pieces of property from residential to business for inclusion in a development. One parcel is located on Linn Avenue between Coldwater and Ney streets and the other is located on Coldwater just off U.S. 29 North.
  • Approved a contract with Municipal Engineering Services, Co. for a water system improvement project. The project will be funded by money left over from a 2007 bond. All funds must be exhausted by Nov. 2017
  • Accepted a proposal to name the Kimball Road extension “Coach Deal Drive” after South Rowan High School coach Larry Deal.
  • Agreed to change the dates of its January, July and September meetings to Jan. 9, July 10 and Sept. 11.
