Area Sports Briefs: Cavs honored in CCC football

Central Carolina Conference all-conference teams were released recently.
North Rowan placed 16 players on the all-leaguefootball team including quarterback Corbin Smith, the CCC Offensive Player of the Year, and end Zion DeBose, who repeated as CCC Defensive Player of the Year.
Smith accounted for more than 2,000 yards of offense, while DeBose had 20 sacks.
DeBose was the first repeat CCC Defensive Player of the year since Lexington’s Chris Bennett in 1989-90.
Offensive linemen Will Anthony, Terry Cathcart and Taelor Davis, receivers Desmond Gray and Alonzo Sirleaf, running backs Jayden and Jaleel Webster, DBS Chris Clodfelter and Keith Carroll, linebacker Javin Goodine, defensive linemen Steven Thurston, Matthew Hoosier, Darren Williams and kicker Jacob Young made all-conference.
Salisbury’s All-CCC players are running backs Cameron Horne and Trell Baker, defensive lineman Jaylen McDowell, linebacker Tywun Rivens and defensive back Tyvion Wood.

Byrd was runner-up for offensive player of the year, while Taylor Thomas was runner-up for defensive honors.
East Davidson’s Vance Hanner is the CCC Coach of the Year. North Rowan’s Ben Hampton was runner-up.

CCC cross country
Salisbury girls Leah Cressler, Ellen Simons, Mary Kaufmann and Julia Honeycutt are All-CCC cross country runners.
Cressler, a freshman, is the CCC Runner of the Year.
West Davidson’s Lynn Ludwig is the CCC Coach of the Year. Runner-up was Salisbury’s Sallie Pittman.

CCC Runner of the Year is Thomasville’s Chris Maxon.
Lexington’s Arthur Johnson is the CCC Coach of the Year. Salisbury’s Tim Pittman was runner-up.

All-CCC girls tennis
Salisbury’s Maria Capito, Skye Mowery, Bethanie Stauffer, Rachel Seifert, Rainey Dunham and Ruth Clement and North Rowan’s Samantha Pritchard and Nicole Bates were named to the All-CCC girls tennis team.
Capito was named CCC Player of the Year.
Salisbury’s Milton Griffith led the Hornets to their 14th consecutive league title and was named CCC Coach of the Year.

All-CCC boys soccer
Salisbury’s Pedro Cruz, Melvin Bonilla, Andrew Kalogeromitros, Jack Fisher, Bryan Cortes, Luke Holland and Brandon Ibanez were named to the All-CCC soccer team.
Cruz was named CCC Defensive Player of the Year.
Salisbury’s Matt Parrish was named CCC Coach of the Year.
The CCC Offensive Player of the Year is Lexington’s Jonathan Ruiz.

All-CCC volleyball
North Rowan’s Brianna White and Salisbury’s Juliana Anderson, Katie Bullock, Abby Lee and Kaya Twitty were named to the All-CCC volleyball team.
West Davidson’s Sarah Green was the CCC Player of the Year. Anderson was runner-up.
Lexington’s Kristian Spain was named CCC Coach of the Year.

All-CCC girls golf
Salisbury’s Madison Day and Abby Robinette are All-CCC golfers.
West Davidson’s Rachael Mast is the CCC Player of the Year.
West Davidson’s David Klinkoski is the CCC Coach of the Year.

College wrestling
UNC Pembroke’s Brandon Sloop (Carson) won the championship at 165 pounds in the Central Florida Open on Saturday.
Sloop won a 6-4 decision against Florida’s Trace Thome, the national champion last season at 157.

College track
Carson-Newman’s Marshall Shank (East Rowan) finished sixth in the pole vault in the JDL College Kickoff Classic.

College men’s hoops
Malik Ford (North Rowan) had six points and seven rebounds for J.C. Smith in Sunday’s 61-53 loss to Tuskegee.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A member of the Benedict men’s basketball team is dead after being hit by a vehicle along a rural road.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said 22-year-old Rashee Jamal Hodges of Smoaks died early Sunday. Hodges was standing on the side of a two-lane roadway near Hopkins when he was struck. He died from traumatic injuries.

CLEMSON, S.C. — After a hard-fought, last-second victory against a Power Five opponent, Clemson coach Brad Brownell wasn’t sure how focused his players might be for winless Coppin State.
The Tigers took about 10 minutes to ease his concerns.
Jaron Blossomgame had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Clemson used an 20-5 early burst to pound the Eagles 85-43 on Sunday.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — V.J. Beachem scored 19 points and Notre Dame matched its best start under coach Mike Brey with a 107-53 win over North Carolina A&T on Sunday night.
Beachem was 7 of 14 from the floor. Matt Ryan knocked down five 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, and Matt Farrell added 15 points for the Irish (8-0), who scored over 100 points for the first time this season, and at least 91 points for the third straight game.
Bonzie Colson had 10 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double for Notre Dame, which had seven players score in double figures.

WASHINGTON — Xavier Rathan-Mayes and C.J. Walker both scored 11 points as Florida State used a suffocating defense to defeat short-handed George Washington 67-48 on Sunday in the BB&T Classic.
Dwayne Bacon added 10 points for the Seminoles (7-1).
