SALISBURY — The Holiday Caravan is back for its 57th year with more than 130 entries to parade in the holiday season.

The caravan will start at 2 p.m. in Spencer and 3 p.m. in Salisbury on Wednesday. First in line will be the Arey Clowns, followed by Kevin Auten, Rowan County sheriff, and the Spencer and Salisbury police departments.

Addie Wise, Legion Post 185 queen, Beth Ann Martin, AMVETS Post 565 queen, Oasis Band and the Happy’s Farm Inc. bus and train will mark the parade’s midpoint.

Once Novant Health and The Forum’s Spinning into Christmas float and the Novant Mammography van have gone by, know that Santa Claus is up next.

Janet Ward Black will be this year’s grand marshal. She is an attorney and principal owner of Ward Black Law, a personal injury law firm in Greensboro. The firm is one of the largest woman-owned law firms in North Carolina with 20 employees.

Black is only the second lawyer in history to serve as president of both the North Carolina Association of Trial Lawyers and the North Carolina Bar Association.

While president of the Bar Association, Black created 4ALL, a program that provides free legal services to the poor. The program has been used as a model all over the country and Canada. The program included a day during which people could call a toll-free number for free legal advice. More than 1,000 North Carolina lawyers participated.

Black was Miss North Carolina in 1980 and won a Grand Talent award at the 1980 Miss America pageant. She was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her service to North Carolina and has been awarded many additional awards and titles.

Adrianna Kelsey is this year’s Miss Holiday Caravan and Amarriya Harris is Miss Weather Girl. Destiny Lutz and Hannah Mayhew were first and second runner up for Miss Holiday Caravan, respectively.

Food Lion is the presenting sponsor and has three entries in the line up. Local schools also have entries, including Livingstone College, Catawba College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Sacred Heart Catholic School, West Rowan High School, East Rowan High School, North Rowan High School, Salisbury High School and Rowan County Early College.

Also making appearances will be mayors from Spencer, East Spencer and Salisbury.

Reserved seats are available in Spencer and Salisbury for $4.50 per seat. For more information, call 704-636-5335.

The caravan will be broadcasted on WAXN-TV64 on Dec. 11 at 10:30 a.m.
