Area Sports Briefs: Carson-Newman’s legendary coach retires

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — America’s active wins leader and the fifth-winningest coach in college football history, Carson-Newman’s Ken Sparks, announced his retirement on Monday inside the football athletic complex that bears his name.
Sparks finished his Carson-Newman career after 37 seasons with 338 wins, 99 losses and two ties. His career winning percentage of .770 is the fourth-highest in college football history.
“On behalf of the entire Carson-Newman family I would like to thank the man who made winning football and Carson-Newman synonymous,” Carson-Newman president Dr. Randall O’Brien said.

Timber sports
Rockwell native Matt Slingerland represented Team USA at the timbersports world championships held in Germany.
Slingerland helped the USA place third and win a bronze medal.

Men’s basketball
For the third time in his career, Augusta senior All-American Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) has been named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week.
Sherrill averaged 23 points per game as the Jaguars opened the season with two wins in Wilson, N.C.
The Jaguars play their home opener Thursday, against Claflin (and Carson’s Tre Williams) at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Pfeiffer’s AJ Clark has been named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week.
Clark averaged 23.5 points per game and led the Falcons to their first 2-0 start since the 2010-11 season.

Davidson Communtiy College rolled, 119-80, against Forest Trail on Monday.
David Tripp (A.l. Brown) scored 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting for the Storm.

Former Pfeiffer stars Damien Argrett (South Rowan) and Rico Grier were honorary assistant coaches for Newberry’s recent game at Charlotte.
Argrett and Grier were All-Americans for Newberry coach Dave Davis when he coached at Pfeiffer.

Women’s hoops
Avery Locklear (South Rowan) had 10 points and two assists as UNC Pembroke won against Coker, 78-75, on Monday.

UNC Asheville’s Kelli Fisher (East Rowan) had four points and three rebounds to help the Bulldogs win against UNC Greensboro, 77-63, on Monday.

Prep hoops
There will be a tripleheader tonight with North Rowan visiting South Rowan. There is no jayvee girls game.
The jayvee boys game will start the action at 5 p.m.

The Annual Sam Moir Classic will be held Dec. 28-30 at Catawba’s Goodman Gym.
Participating are the boys and girls teams from the six Rowan-Salisbury public schools, Davie County and Mooresville.
Each school will receive an equal share of the proceeds, which support all athletic programs within each school.

West Rowan pitcher Austin Love will sign with North Carolina on Thursday morning.

Prep softball
A.L. Brown’s Allie Baker signed with Catawba on Monday.

Prep cross country
Northwest Cabarrus’ Ethan Bemis signed with Catawba on Monday.

8th-grade basketball
Erwin’s girls (3-0) won against North Rowan, 42-16.
Carleigh Perry scored 19 points. Colbie Perry had 13 points, while Liza Simmerson had six.

North Rowan’s boys beat Erwin, 45-31.
James Gladden (11 points), Kendrell Goodes (9), Nick Colson (7), Kyree Sims (7) and Javon Smith (6) led the scoring for the Mavericks.
North plays at Knox on Thursday.

Southeast’s girls won against Knox, 32-14.
The Patriots were led by Tate Barger with 15 points and Ellie Wilhelm with 11.
Knox was led by Ellen Yang with seven points.

College volleyball
Belmont Abbey senior Aimee Cloninger (Carson) was named to the Conference Carolinas all-tournament team.
Cloninger came to Belmont Abbey as a junior college transfer in 2015 and made an immediate impact. She played in 57 matches, averaging 2.16 kills and 2.41 digs per game.

The third-seeded Newberry team (19-11) will host sixth-seeded Catawba (16-12) at 7 p.m. tonight in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship.
The winner advances to the SAC Tournament semifinals to face the winner of No. 2 Lincoln Memorial and No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne at 6:30 on Friday at Wingate.

College football
The South Atlantic Conference announced players of the week. Newberry running back Braxton Ivery was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tusculum linebacker Deres Benn was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, Tusculum kicker Will Tommie picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

South YMCA
The South Rowan Y is accepting boys basketball registrations for grades 3-8. Registration is open until Dec. 5.
Practice begins in mid-December. Games will begin in January.
Little Shooters II registration is open now for boys and girls in grades 1-2.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Eli Manning threw his third touchdown pass of the game on a fourth-down gamble by coach rookie Ben McAdoo, and the New York Giants beat the Cincinnati Bengals 21-20 Monday night for their first four-game winning streak since 2013.
Manning threw scoring passes of 10 yards apiece to rookie Jerrell Adams and Odell Beckham in the first half and a game-winning 3-yarder to rookie Sterling Shepard on a daring call with New York (6-3) down 20-14 early in the fourth quarter.
