Pope had 30 assists and eight digs for the Bears in a win against Coker.

Belmont Abbey tied for third in Conference Carolinas with a 12-4 record.

Catawba volleyball won its sixth straight match by sweeping Carson-Newman on Saturday.
The Indians won 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22 to improve to 15-10 overall and 13-7 in the SAC.
McKenzie Garrison and Audrey Hoffman had 10 kills each.

Men’s basketball
Freshmen led Maryland to a 95-61 win against visiting Catawba in an exhibition game played Saturday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
Melo Trimble sprained an ankle and played only nine minutes for the Terrapins, but Maryland enjoyed a 17-2 run and took a 50-24 lead at halftime.
Jameel Taylor led Catawba with 14 points. Gil McGregor scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Jerrin Morrison added nine points.
Jordan Barber joined McGregor, who played at Wake Forest, with three steals, while freshman Peyton Pappas handed out four assists.
Anthony Cowan and Justin Jackson each scored 15 for the Terrapins.
Maryland shot over 50 percent in each half and finished the game at 57 percent from the field.
Catawba shot 34 percent in the first half and 37 percent after the break.
The Indians had fewer turnovers than Maryland (22-15). Catawba collected 13 steals and pulled down 18 offensive rebounds.
Catawba begins regular-season play this weekend. The Indians will play twice in Lenoir-Rhyne’s gym, taking on Francis Marion on Friday and UNC Pembroke on Saturday.

Dulkoski made four 3-pointers.

MyQuon Stout (Carson) had four tackles for Appalachian State in Saturday’s win against Texas State.

Charlotte’s Kalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) had 183 rushing yards on 29 carries as the 49ers won at Southern Miss on Saturday. Phillips had a 72-yard run — the second-longest in school history.
It was the fourth 100-yard game of the season for Phillips and the 15th of his career.

Georgia’s Marshall Long (South Rowan) averaged 41.2 yard per punt in Saturday’s win against Kentucky.
Long had a 50-yard punt and put two punts inside the 20.

College wrestling
UNC Pembroke’s Brandon Sloop (Carson) went 3-2 in his first college tournament and placed fifth.
Sloop redshirted last season as he recovered from ACL surgery.

Coll. cross country
UNC Pembroke’s Jonathan and Matthew Martin (Carson) competed in the Division II Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships in Montevallo, Alabama on Saturday.
Jonathan’s time was 32:40 for 47th out of 169 runners. Matthew’s time was 33:30 for 77th. This was their first 10K event.
The UNCP Braves finished seventh.

Gil Gilreath (NW Cabarrus) helped Mars Hill’s men finish second in the regional. They qualified for the nationals.

Catawba freshman Hannah Mercer set a school women’s 6k record at the Southeast Regional.
Mercer covered the course in a time of 22:53 to lower the school mark by more than a second over the previous best of 23:57 set by Rory Godsey in 2004. Mercer placed 31st.
The Catawba women placed 12th among 27 schools while the men were 18th out of a field of 24.
Abbie Adams, Patience Hunt and Nikki Elminowski were next for the Indians. All finished in the top 80.
Curtis Carmack led the Catawba men with a 67th-place finish. His time of 33:10 was the third best 10k by a Catawba Indian.

College soccer
The Carson-Newman Eagles avenged a regular-season loss at Wingate University on Sunday afternoon, prevailing, 2-1, against the Bulldogs in the 2016 South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer championship match at Manchester Meadows.

In the SAC men’s championship match, Tusculum’s Andre De Giorgi booted home a golden goal in the 109th minute to clinch the championship game against Lincon Memorial

Pfeiffer’s men’s soccer team was crowned Conference Carolinas Tournament champions as the Falcons (18-2) won in decisive fashion, 5-1, over Limestone on Saturday night.
Nathan Regis was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for the third year in a row.
The senior scored six goals in the tournament, three in the final.

College swimming
Catawba finished up the Wingate Quad Meet with Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne and Limestone on Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Freshman Mario Zaninovic picked up another individual win as the Catawba men collected 379 points. The women finished with 250 points as both squads finished third.

Prep volleyball
Cox Mill dominated all three sets in their sweep of Chapel Hill (24-6) to win the school’s first volleyball state championship at historic and newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum.
The Chargers got 22 kills from 3A MVP Taylor Rowland.
The Chargers wrapped up the year 34-0, only dropping five sets. They only lost two sets in six rounds of the playoffs.

Prep soccer
Fifth-seeded Salisbury will play at fourth-seeded Franklin in the second round of the 2A state playoffs on Tuesday.
Playing at Franklin (16-5) means a 200-mile trip for the Hornets deep into the mountains. Franklin is located in the southwestern corner of North Carolina where Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina converge.
The Hornets anticipate dealing with frostier weather as well as with the major travel miles. Franklin is a lot closer to Atlanta than to Charlotte.
Franklin’s standout player Kevin Sanchez has 35 goals this season.
Franklin’s Panthers haven’t been a soccer power until recent years, but they reached the Western final in 2014. Franklin eliminated West Stanly in the first round, while Salisbury was beating Polk County.
The game will be played at 6 p.m. at Macon Middle School, 1345 Wells Road, Franklin, 28734. Admission is $6. Only NCHSAA level passes will be accepted.
