Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury soccer gets big CCC road win

Salisbury’s boys soccer team won, 3-1, at West Davidson on Monday in a Central Carolina Conference match.
Melvin Bonilla scored all three Salisbury goals.
Bonilla scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half and completed the hat trick early in the second half.
Salisbury (9-2-4, 2-0-1 CCC) benefited from two assists by Tony Figueroa and one by Juan Silva.
West Davidson got on the board late in the match when Hugh Bennett scored on a volley. Jack Fisher played outstanding in goal, saving a penalty kick with 28 seconds left in the match.
Salisbury plays a CCC match tonight at Thomasville. The jayvee/varsity doubleheader has start times of 5:30 and 7 p.m.
Prep golf
In SPC golf at Rocky River on Monday, Hickory Ridge won with a 140 score. Cox Mill shot 148 for second place.
Hickory Ridge’s Sara Deese shot 41 for medalist honors. Cox Mill’s Jaidan Rubinstein was second at 46.
Camryn Corriher’s 51 led East Rowan (161) to third place. Micah Furr shot 48 and led Carson (165) to a fourth-place finish. West Rowan shot 176, while South Rowan shot 181.
Prep tennis
Salisbury (11-1, 9-0) clinched its 14th straight Central Carolina Conference girls tennis championship by beating West Davidson, 9-0.
The Hornets have won every year since Lexington took a title in 2002.
It was Senior Night for the Hornes and also a Pink Out Night for breast cancer awareness.
Winning for the Hornets in singles were Maria Capito (6-2, 6-0), Skye Mowery (7-6 (10-5), 6-1), Bethanie Stauffer (6-1, 6-0), Rachel Seifert (6-0, 6-1), Rainey Dunham (6-4, 6-0) and Ruth Clement (6-3, 6-0).
In doubles, winners were Capito/Mowery (8-2), Stauffer/Seifert (8-2) and Clement/Dunham (8-2).
Salisbury will play Wednesday at City Park against North Rowan to finish the regular season.

West Rowan’s girls tennis team won, 6-3, on the road at South Piedmont Conference opponent Cox Mill on Monday.
MacKenzie Koontz and Madison Smith fought back to win their matches for a 3-all tie after singles.
Then the Falcons swept doubles.
No. 1 seed Payton Holt (6-0, 6-1), Koontz (6-7, 6-4, 10-4) and Smith (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3) won in singles.
In doubles, the winning teams for the Falcons were Holt/Koontz (10-2), Amber White/Abby Johnson (11-10 (10-3) and Skylar Jahnke/ Mira White (10-8).
West Rowan (8-4, 5-3 SPC) will host Hickory Ridge on Wednesday. That will be Senior Night.

East Rowan’s girls beat Central Cabarrus, 9-0, for another SPC win.
Katie Barnes, Angel Scialdone, Lauren Weisensel, Mia Graham, Shannon Mahaffey and Victoria Plyler won in singles for the second-place Mustangs.
Winning doubles teams were Barnes/Scialdone, Weisensel/Mahaffey and Graham/Plyler.
Prep cross country
The Rowan County Cross Country Championships will be held Wednesday at Dan Nicholas Park.
There will be a jayvee race at 3:30 p.m.
The boys championship race (top seven from each team) will be at 4:15, with the girls championship to follow.
Varsity volleyball
In South Piedmont Conference volleyball on Tuesday, Carson topped South Rowan, 25-20, 25-14 and 27-25.
Carson stayed tied for second in the SPC with Hickory Ridge. The Bulls were 3-1 winners against Robinson. East Rowan dropped a five-set match to Northwest Cabarrus. Undefeated Cox Mill swept Concord.
In the CCC, North Rowan won at home against Thomasville, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21 and 27-25.
Jayvee volleyball
South Rowan won 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20 against Carson on Monday.
Michaela Hallman had 16 assists for the Raiders. Anna Blume had eight digs and six aces. Caroline Brooks had eight kills and 15 digs.
Women’s soccer
Catawba forward Becky Frost and Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Andrea Leano are co-players of the week for the SAC.
Frost scored three goals in wins over Pfeiffer and Brevard.
College golf
Catawba’s men are eighth in a 16-team field after the first round of the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament. Catawba shot 296 on Monday.
All five Catawba golfers posted scores of 75 or better, with Jordan Taylor carding a 73 to stand 18th. Trey Burton and Mack Sheppard had 74s, while Jesse Vensel and Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) turned in 75s.
College football
South Atlantic Conference players of the week include Lenoir-Rhyne running back Nelson Brown, Wingate DB Moryan Johnson, L-R DB Sherrod Williams and Tusculum return man Evan Altizer.
Sacred Heart soccer
Sacred Heart defeated Tri-City Christian, 4-0, in varsity soccer.
Scoring for the Dolphins in the weather-shortened match were Theresa Holland, Nicholas Talero , Will Webb and Colin Donaldson.
The defense was led by Spencer Hansen and Nick Antosek.

Sacred Heart soccer also defeated Concordia Lutheran, 8-2.
Webb, John Sentilles, Donaldson, Jalon Walker, Will Koontz, Luis Avilez, Drew Hansen and Kellin Ours scored a goal each.
Talero and Sutton Webb also were outstanding for the Dolphins.
Fishing
Lexington’s Robert Mixon weighed in a two-day total of 10 bass totaling 33 pounds, 14 ounces, to win the FLW Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division Super Tournament on High Rock Lake.
Mixon took home $7,316 for his efforts.
Maiden’s David Williams caught a bass weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $667.
Louis Kraft (West Rowan) won the co-angler division and earned $2,658 with a two-day cumulative catch of seven bass weighing 19 pounds, 5 ounces.
