Conference for parents of children with cancer is Saturday

A Childhood Cancer Caregiver Conference will be held Saturday at Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center in Winston-Salem, sponsored by  the Sisters Inspiring Sisters Inc. (SISI) group.

The conference is part of the Robert Stephen Gilmore Childhood Cancer Initiative, a project of SISI, which provides “transportation assistance across the colors of cancer.”

Stephanie Glance, executive director of the Kay Yow Foundation, will be the keynote speaker for the event, which is free for all parents and caregivers, and will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the medical center, 1 Medical Center Blvd. All events will be held on the 10th floor of the Comprehensive Cancer Center in rooms B and C.

It will be a full day of workshops for parents and caregivers that will include educating the child with cancer, understanding the importance of proper nutrition, how to effectively use growth hormones and what to expect with late effects. Lunch is included.

Other topics include optimizing physical well-being, optimizing mental well-being, and making a difference, with Wendy Baskins, Gilmore’s mother.
