Khalid Myers scored with four minutes left to lift Carson’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against South Rowan in SPC play on Tuesday.
Grayson Owens had the shutout.
Leaders for South included Walker Joyce, Adrian Figueroa and keeper Cameron Corriher.

Salisbury romped to a 7-0 win against North Stanly on Tuesday.
Andrew Kalogeromitros got the Hornets (5-1-2) on the board unassisted early in the contest.
Scoring their first goals of the season for the Hornets were Pedro Cruz, Nick Veros and Daniel Tinajero. Jerime Diaz, a senior in his first season on the varsity, scored his first goal. Luke Holland, a sophomore in his first year at SHS, scored his first career goal. Brody Dillon, a freshman,also found the net for the first time.
Kalogeromitros had two assists. Dillon, Bryan Garcia, Jesus Sanchez and Melvin Bonilla had one.
Jack Fisher and Tinajero combined for the shutout in goal.
Playing well for the Hornets were Sanchez, Garcia and Spencer Blackwell.
Next up for the Hornets is a rematch of last year’s state semifinal contest between Salisbury and Trinity. It will be a jayvee-varsity doubleheader, at Trinity. Game times are 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Prep tennis
Salisbury won its Central Carolina Conference opener on Tuesday, beating East Davidson, 8-1.
Winning for the Hornets in singles were Maria Capito, Bethanie Stauffer, Rachel Seifert, Rainey Durham and Ruth Clement.
Doubles winners for Salisbury were Capito/Stauffer, Mowery/Seifert and Clement/Durham.
Capito is undefeated at No. 1 singles.
Salisbury will host Lexington at 4:30 on Wednesday.

College volleyball
Catawba opened South Atlantic Conference volleyball with a five-set win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday night at Shuford Gym. The Catawba Indians won by scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-23 and 15-6.
McKenzie Garrison and Alex Hopper each tallied 19 kills to help the Indians rally after they were down two sets to one.
Meredith Furr (Cox Mill) had 23 digs for the Indians.
Catawba heads to Brevard for its next match on Friday at 7 p.m.

College golf
Catawba finished eighth at the Cutter Creek Women’s Golf Invitational, played in Snow Hill on Monday and Tuesday.
UNCP’s Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) 78-75 — 153 and finished fifth.
Catawba’s 325 on Tuesday gave the team a 660 mark for the tournament hosted by Barton at the 5,894-yard, par-72 Cutter Creek Golf Club.
UNC Pembroke held on to its lead to post a 10-shot win over Mount Olive after a two-round total of 621.
Catawba was led by freshman Katie Barts, who shot a 78 on Tuesday to finish 14th. She posted a 159 total.
Victoria Hedrick, who also had a 78 Tuesday, finished two shots behind and was 19th.

College soccer
After extending its winning streak to 27 straight games, the Pfeiffer men’s soccer team remained No. 1 overall in the NSCAA national rankings announced on Tuesday.
The Falcons opened the season with wins over Lander (4-1) and Catawba (4-2).

Minor leagues
Right-handed pitcher Brannon Easterling posted the lowest earned run average in the South Atlantic League in 2016 to become the first Kannapolis Intimidators arm to lead the circuit in ERA since 2005.
Easterling finished the season with a 1.86 ERA.

College football
Western Carolina sophomore offensive lineman Kaleb Spry played in the opening loss to East Carolina.
Spry played in six games as a redshirt freshman.
He was named 2015 Fall Academic All-Southern Conference and to the 2015-16 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

East YMCA
The East Rowan YMCA is seeking highly motivated volunteer coaches.
Coaches will work with youth in soccer or volleyball, teaching, modeling, and mentoring the character traits of honesty, respect, responsibility, honesty and faith, as well as teaching the skills of the sport. Coaches set the practice schedule, within the guidelines of the Sports Department.

Local golf
Fifty-four members played in their own foursomes in the fourth round of the GARS Annual ABCD Tournament at Corbin Hills Golf Club.
‘A’ Flight winner was Clyde Crawford with a net of 66.20. ‘B’ Flight winner was Ross Howard with a net of 62.40. ‘C’ Flight winner was Ralph Brown with a net of 63.40. ‘D’ Flight winner was Ken Miller with a net of 62.90.
Winsten Mahaffey had a double eagle two on the par-5 No. 6 hole.
Winsten Mahaffey, Bill Saunders, Dick Hatoway, Ralph Brown, O.J. Chandler, and J.C. Ritchie shot their age or better.
