Rockwell High School Class of 1954

Rockwell High School Class of 1954 met July 29 at Ryan’s Family Steakhouse at 1:30 p.m. with 13 classmates present, along with eight spouses.

James Puckett, president, welcomed everyone ad recognized two classmates who are deceased since we last met — Eugene Sides and Nancy Lefler Ludwig.

Everyone enjoyed a buffet lunch. Following the meal, classmates reminisced and shared a time of fellowship.

Class members who attended were JoAnn Cox Basinger, Naomi File Carrick, Shirley Jacobs Heffner, Ruth Trexler Ritchie, Violet Eudy Dodd, Mary Catherine Stoner Arey, Clyde Arey, Lee Basinger, Larry Vanhoy, James Puckett, Ken Shue, Wayne Bost and Terry Miller.

We hope to  plan another reunion next year. Those on the planning committee are James Puckett, Naomi Carrick, Clyde and Mary Catherine Arey and Joan Basinger.

 

Members attend 67th Boule Conference

Members of the Delta Xi Omega Graduate Chapter attended the 67th Boule Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in Atlanta, Ga. The theme was “Launching New Dimensions of Service, Celebrating a Legacy of Sisterhood and World Wide Impact.”

International Sorority President, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, presided over the six-day conference, where six specialized forums and more than 100 workshops focusing on leadership, professional, personal and community development were presented. In addition, members witnessed the renaming of Atlanta’s Harwell Heights Park to Dr. Mary Shy Scott Memorial Park in honor of the sorority’s 23rd International President. Five other local playgrounds were refurbished in conjunction with the1908 Playground Project that strives to refurbish 1,908 playgrounds by the end of 2018.

As a nationwide community service project, each chapter provided dresses made from pillowcases. The local chapter provided over 40 dresses for “Dresses for Africa,” made in conjunction with Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church with special assistance from Emma Hunter and Doris Allen. A total of 41,000 dresses were collected to be delivered to Nigeria, Africa. Members of the sorority also donated 4,900 backpacks filled with school supplies, 3,700 seasonal wraps including jackets, gloves, and hats. Also donated were 3,700 pairs of eyeglasses to be recycled for future use.

Those attending the Boule were Lillian L. Morgan, Chapter President; Sh’Myra L. Moore, Chapter Vice-President; Carolyn P. Holt, Graduate Advisor; Stephanie N.Mogran, Chapter Secretary, Renese Bates, Chapter Financial Secretary; Earnestine M. Krider, Yolanda R. Woods, Linda McCullough, and Tanya Dixon-Neely, Sarah S. Lightner; Shirley Holt, Fonda W. Kirk and Stephanie McNeil.

 

Alpha Kappa Alpha  facilitates workshop 

The program began with a presentation on “Bullying, Who Does it and Why” by Renese Bates and was followed with a discussion on “Self-Esteem, How to Improve Yours” led by Carolyn P. Holt. Other members of Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. assisted in the facilitating, including Lillian L. Mogan, Sh’Myra L. Moore, Lovetta Ealy Moore, and Yolanda R. Woods.

A special activity was conducted on confidence building by Leanese R. Woods.

The activities were designed to assist young ladies enrolled in the Stepping Up Summer Enrichment Program at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church. Each young lady was given the opportunity to discuss situations focusing on bullying, self-esteem, school conduct and academic excellence.

All students enrolled in the enrichment program, both females and males, could select two books to be added to their personal libraries. Lillian L. Morgan is president of the Graduate Chapter and Donnie Jefferson is the Director of the Stepping Up Summer Enrichment Program at Gethsemane.
