Area Sports Briefs: Johnson strong in Kannapolis win over Mocksville

Blake Johnson pitched into the ninth inning and held Mocksville to two hits as Kannapolis won, 5-1, in a division game played at Northwest Cabarrus High on Thursday.
Kannapolis had 13 hits, with Chandler Hubbard getting four. Hunter Travis had three hits, and Mark Perkins had two. Shaggy Wyatt walked three times.

Local golf
In the SignArt North Carolina Open at The Club at Irish Creek, winner David Kocher shot 67-64-201 and finished 12-under.

The first “Junior Mac” 9-hole Tournament was held Thursday at McCanless Golf Club.
Alex Miller won with a 38. Colby Patterson and Brodie Perry shot 43s.
Perry had the longest drive on No. 7.

Junior Legion
Carson lost to Mocksville, 4-2, in a non-league game on Wednesday.
Brycen Holshouser pitched well into the fifth inning, striking out six. He was struck on his pitching arm by a line drive in the fifth.
Maddux Holshouser took the loss in the seventh.
Karson Beacham and Luke Barringer had RBIs for Carson.

On Thursday, Carson won, 9-4, against Rowan County in a non-league game.
Cameron Prugh had two hits and two RBIs for Carson. Brycen Holshouser had a double.
Cole Hales pitched five innings for the win. Devan Gay and Jaxon Miller finished up on the mound.
For Rowan, Bryson Wagner had four hits. Daniel Gonzalez had three hits. Chandler Lippard had two hits.
Carson is at Mount Pleasant tonight.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators wasted six shutout innings by starting pitcher Johnathan Frebis (4-4) and lost, 1-0, to Hickory on Thursday at home.
Kannapolis (23-37) suffered its third shutout loss of the season.
The Intimidators continue the series against the Crawdads tonight at 7:05 p.m.
Saturday night will be a Fireworks Night.

Wood bat leagues
Ross Hoffner (Davie, Montreat) went 2-for-3, drove in one run and scored two in the Mooresville Spinners’ 12-8 win over the Lenoir Oilers on Wednesday in the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.

Hoops Unlimited
The 23rd annual Hoops Unlimited basketball camp will be held at North Stanly Middle School on June 20-23. The camp is for boys and girls in grades 2-5.

East Rowan basketball camp
East Rowan boys coach Kurt Misenheimer is directing Mustangs Basketball Camp.
Camp sessions are June 13-15 for girls and boys, grades 2-5.
Camp sessions are June 20-22 for girls and boys, grades 6-9.
Camps are limited to 40 players.
