Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators fall; Wonders host softball playoff game

Starting pitcher Chris Comito matched his season-high with five innings of work, but Greensboro took advantage of errors to beat the Intimidators, 3-2, on Monday in Kannapolis.
The Intimidators (16-21) dropped their fourth straight game despite out-hitting the Grasshoppers, 7-4.
The Intimidators and Grasshoppers continuethe series tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Prep softball
Weather permitting, A.L. Brown’s softball team will host Davie County tonight at 7 p.m. at Kannapolis Middle School in a third-round 4A playoff game.
The Wonders won the MECKA and are seeded fifth in the 4A West bracket.
A.L. Brown (23-3) hasn’t lost since March 15 and has won playoff games against Myers Park and Olympic.
Davie, the No. 20 seed, finished third in the Central Piedmont Conference behind North Davidson and West Forsyth but has won road playoff games at Hough and Northwest Guilford.
Davie (17-9) has won its last six games.

American Legion
Stanly County took advantage of errors and beat Kannapolis, 3-2, on Monday at Albemarle’s Don Montgomery Park in the opener for both teams.
Alex Rodriguez pitched six strong innings for Kannapolis and didn’t allow an earned run.
Kannapolis has been bolstered by the addition of five former Southern Rowan players — South Rowan seniors Blake Johnson, Shaggy Wyatt and Bo Corriher, South Rowan graduate Hunter Travis and A.L. Brown graduate Matt Brown.
Kannapolis is scheduled to host Concord tonight at 7 p.m. at Northwest Cabarrus High.

Rowan County is scheduled to open at home on Saturday against Davidson County and is scheduled to play Davidson County at Lexington’s Holt-Moffitt Field on Sunday. With Jim Gantt coaching Catawba in the Southeast Regional tournament, Seth Graham will coach the Legion team in the early games.

Prep track
In the 3A Midwest Regional track meet held at East Rowan on Saturday, West Rowan’s boys scored 59 points and placed second behind Marvin Ridge.
Rounding out the top five were Southern Guilford, Weddington and Cox Mill.
Carson was ninth with 25 points. East Rowan was 12th with 18 points.

Cuthberson won the girls 3A Midwest Regional with Marvin Ridge, Southern Guilford, Statesville and Anson rounding out the top five.
Carson was 15th with 21 points. South Rowan was 19th with 10 points. West Rowan was 23rd with 2 points.
The 3A state championships will be held in Greensboro on Friday.

Prep golf
In the 3A NCISAA State Championships at the Country Club of Salisbury, Cannon School shot a first-round 288 and leads by eight shots over Arden’s Christ School.
Charlotte Latin is third at 303.
Cannon’s Michael Sanders is the individual leader with a 67. Cannon’s Michael Childress is tied for fourth at 72.

East hoops camp
Mustang Basketball Camp will be held at the East Rowan gym this summer.
East boys coach Kurt Misenheimer is the head instructor. Sessions are limited to 50 applicants.
There are two sessions.
The June 13-16 sessions is for boys and girls who will be in grades 2-5.
The June 20-23 session is for boys and girls who will be in grades 6-9.
Camp is from 8 until 3 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and from 8-12 on Thursday.
The cost is $100 and includes a camp T-short and lunch the first three days.

Rotary tennis
Entry deadline for the Salisbury Rotary Tennis Championships is May 23.
Proceeds will benefit Rowan County Youth Services Bureau and The Crosby Scholars Program.

College volleyball
Catawba volleyball coach Ginger Hamric, announced four newcomers for the 2016 season.
Joining the squad this fall will be Julia Adams (Canton, Ohio), Allie Grubb (Wheatmore), Jaida Henderson (South Granville) and Morgan Hester (Carson).
Adams is a 5-6 setter.Grubb is a 5-10 hitter. Henderson, a 5-11 middle, helped her team win the 2A state championship.
Hester, a 5-6 setter, helped Carson to three conference titles and a pair of state runner-up finishes. She earned all-conference and all-county honors as Carson produced a 110-18 record over her four seasons. Hester was captain and team MVP for the Cougars as a senior, averaging just over nine assists per set with 87 digs, 52 aces, 51 blocks and 97 kills.

College softball
Junior Steffi Sides (East Rowan) recently completed the softball season at Guilford.
Sides made 14 appearances with 11 starts for the Quakers. Sides served primarily on defense at third base. In 28 chances at the hot corner, Sides recorded eight putouts and 20 assists for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Sides helped coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers to a 25-18 overall record (8-10 ODAC). Guilford qualified for its third straight ODAC Tournament this year.

Rock Your Socks 5K
The fourth annual Rock Your Socks 5k will be held Sunday (April 17) at 2 p.m. at Knox Middle School.

WR Basketball Camp
West Rowan Falcon basketball camps will be held on June 13-15 and July 11-13. The cost is $50 for a three-day session. Coach Mike Gurley will lead the camp. Camps are for boys who will be heading to grades 7-9 and for boys and girls heading to grades 2-6.
