Area Sports Briefs: West baseball wins opener

Kacey Otto and Austin Love drove in three runs apiece as West Rowan’s baseball team opened SPC play with a 15-4 win against Robinson on Wednesday.
Brandon Walton had two hits and two RBIs.
West scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break it open.
Catawba signee Bryan Ketchie struck out five and got the win.

East Rowan opened the baseball season with a 10-0, five-inning win against Cox Mill at Staton Field on Wednesday.
The game barely lasted an hour.
“Everything we’ve preached, everything we’ve practiced, we went out and executed,” East coach Brian Hightower said. “I’m not saying they’ll all be like this, but I saw a lot of good things today.”
John Owen pitched a two-hitter for the Mustangs, and East played errorless defense.
Ike Freeman drove in two runs, and Chandler Blackwelder had two hits.

Salisbury got its first win under new coach Mike Herndon by edging Lincoln Charter 8-7 at Robertson Stadium.
A clutch hit in the sixth by Griffin Myers keyed a big comeback by Salisbury (1-1). Myers’s hit tied the game 7-all, and a single by Will Steinman put the Hornets ahead.
Alex Link had a run-scoring triple for the Hornets. Alex Yang and Chandler Lippard also had RBIs.
Joe Steinman was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched two innings.

North Rowan got three RBIs from Henderson Lentz in Tuesday’s 18-0 romp against North Hills.
Brett Tucker and McGuire Smith had two RBIs each.

West Davidson won 8-1 against South Davidson on Wednesday.
Chris Mauck drove in three runs for the Green Dragons (1-1).
Austin Ferguson had three hits and was the winning pitcher.

Prep softball
West Rowan’s softball team has won two straight SPC championships and got the new season off to a good start with a 6-3 win at Robinson in eight innings on Wednesday.
Peyton Greene was the winning pitcher and struck out 12. She also hit a home run.
Taylor Martin had two hits and scored twice. Mary Sobataka had a triple. Parker Greene drove in the tiebreaking run in the top of the eighth.
Jordan LeMaster homered for the Bulldogs and had three hits.

College baseball
Catawba won 10-2 at Mount Olive on Tuesday, with Riley Myers (Salisbury) pitching six innings for his first college win.
Luke Setzer (East Rowan) drove in three runs. Malachi Hanes had two triples. Jake Kimble knocked in two runs.

Catawba lost 9-4 at Belmont Abbey on Wednesday.
Nick Beinlich’s two-out double in the fifth snapped a 3-3 tie and sparked Belmont Abbey (13-3-1) to the win.
Setzer, Will Albertson, Dylan Richardson and Austin Stilley drove in runs for Catawba (7-7).
Connor Johnson (East Rowan) pitched five innings and took the loss.
Catawba returns to SAC action this weekend, hosting Tusculum at Newman Park in a three-game series. The series startswith a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

College hoops
Davidson County Community College’s Tre Williams (Carson) was named national player of the week for D-III junior colleges.
Williams averaged 24.0 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds for the Storm.
The Storm will be playing for a national title in New York.
College lacrosse
Queens got four goals from Kelly Dowd and beat Catawba 16-10 in SAC women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.
Catawba’s Meredith Jones had four goals and two assists.

College tennis
Catawba’s tennis teams won against Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday.
The women won 7-2, while the men won 5-4.

MLB baseball
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) did well in his first inning for the Detroit Tigers. Parnell had a 1-2-3 inning and had one strikeout.
