Area Sports Briefs: Prep basketball scheduled for tonight

Basketball tournaments are scheduled to get under way tonight in the four area conferences.
That’s assuming students were able to go to school today. That decision wasn’t going to be made until about 4 a.m. Temperatures were expected to rise during the night.

The only Rowan teams playing at home tonight are the Salisbury girls (7 p.m. vs. West Davidson) and the West Rowan girls (7:30 vs. Cox Mill).
Carson’s boys are playing Hickory Ridge at Robinson at 6 p.m.
West Rowan’s boys are at Robinson at 7:30 p.m.
Carson’s girls are playing Robinson at 6 p.m. at Hickory Ridge.
East Rowan’s girls play at Hickory Ridge at 7:30 p.m.
In the CPC, Davie’s girls play at home tonight at 6 p.m. against Mount Tabor. Davie’s boys play at Reagan at 6:30 p.m.
In the MECKA, A.L. Brown’s boys play at Hough in a 6:30 p.m. game.

North Rowan and Salisbury are likely to hear early today from the NCHSAA concerning the incidents that prematurely ended Friday’s boys basketball game at Salisbury.
North AD Ben Hampton said on Monday night that he hadn’t heard anything yet. NCHAA offices were closed on Monday due to the weather.
Neither North Rowan nor Salisbury was included in Monday’s updated tournament brackets on the Central Carolina Conference website, an indiciation that penalties are forthcoming.
North and Salisbury finished 1-2 in the CCC regular season and North (20-2) is ranked second in 2A.

Prep wrestling
The NCHSAA will hold its annual state wrestling championships on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Greensboro.
Almost 1400 matches will be contested over the course of an event that crowns 56 individual champions.
There will be a champion in each of the 14 weight divisions for each of the four different classifications.
4A Weigh-ins begin Thursday at 3:30 p.m. with the 4A first round beginning at 5 p.m.
The 2A and 3A weigh-ins and first round will follow.
The 3A team title was very tightly contested a year ago as 76 different schools were represented in the tournament. Morehead earned the title for the second year in a row.
Hunter Huss is the defending champ in 2A.

College football
Bob Trott (A.L. Brown), defensive coordinator at Richmond the last five years, has taken the defensive coordinator job at James Madison.
Trott played at UNC in the 1970s.

College track
Livingstone’s Garland Archie (North Rowan) won the shot put in the CIAA Indoor Championships with an effort of 50 feet, 1 3/4 inches.
Livingstone’s Ebony Moore won the women’s shot put with a throw of 43-6.

College hoops
Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) made four 3-pointers in a 76-54 win against North Florida on Monday.

Texas Tech’s Brielle Blaire (North Rowan) had four points and four rebounds in Saturday’s 66-36 loss to Baylor.

Shay Steele (West Rowan) had 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks on Saturday in Morehead State’s 89-74 loss to Belmont.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) scored eight points for UNC Pembroke in Saturday’s 60-48 loss to Armstrong.

East Diamond Sports
Online registration is open until March 15 at www.eastrowandiamondsports.com.
Onsite registrations will be held at the East Rowan High School cafeteria on March 10 and 11 from 6-8 p.m. and March 12 from 9-11 a.m.
Rates are as follows: T-ball: $75 (3-6 yr. old boys/girls), coach pitch: $85 (6-8 yr old), minors: $95 (8-10 yr old), majors: $105 (10-12 yr old), 8U softball: $85, 10U softball: $95, 12U softball: $95.
Registration fees include a hat and shirt for baseball and a shirt and socks for softball.
End of season trophies are provided for all players.
All players receive a free Cheerwine slushie after their games from the concession stand.
All games are played at Rockwell Elementary School with opening day set for Super Saturday, April 16.
