MOUNT ULLA — It was the fourth quarter, the game long since decided, but sophomore Caleb Mauldin was still scoring for the West Rowan Falcons.
“One guy is cooking y’all!” barked Robinson coach Lavar Batts Sr., as he admonished the collection of reserves who were being lit up by Mauldin.
Mauldin scored 32 points on Thursday, spinning for bank shots, stepping out to the top of the circle for 3-pointers, and powering for three-point plays.
The bad news is Mauldin, who is having an amazing season, provided 70 percent of the Falcons’ production. They were blown out by Robinson, 76-46, and it could’ve been a lot worse.
Robinson’s studs sat down for good with more than six minutes remaining.
Lavar Batts Jr., a junior being recruited by a host of Division I schools, showed why. He dunked backwards, sideways, left-handed, right-handed and two-handed on his way to 17 points, and he made crossovers that were hazardous to the health of those defending him.
The scary thing about third-ranked Robinson (17-3, 14-1) — at least on this night — was that Batts was only the Bulldogs’ second most dominant player.
Daniel Spencer, a 6-foot-2 senior, was even better, blasting dunks, bombing 3-pointers, and defending with so much energy that you would’ve thought Robinson was battling Concord.
Robinson led 17-4 after a quarter and by 36-18 at halftime. The game was halted briefly in the third quarter when Spencer scored his 1,000th career point to make it 50-21.
There was no P.A. available, so clock operator Jan Dowling, who has been known to raise her voice occasionally as West’s volleyball coach, yelled to the crowd that Spencer had reached the milestone. Fans applauded the effort of Spencer – and Dowling.
They also applauded Mauldin, who already has scored 495 points this season and is averaging 23.6 points per game.
Only 15 times in school history has a Falcon reached 500 in a season.
Jordan McKenzie, son of former East Rowan coach Greg, also threw down a dunk for Robinson.
West’s No. 2 scorer was recent jayvee callup Tyrese Lawrence, who battled for nine points in the paint.
There’s plenty of hope for the future for West (7-14, 5-10), but there are nights in the present when the Falcons will suffer growing pains. This was one of them.

South splits
South Rowan’s girls basketball team won 48-44 at Cox Mill on Thursday.
Janiya Downs scored 18 points for the Raiders.
Taziah Hardin had 12, and Riley Corriher and Malaysia Williams scored six each.
South led most of the game, but Cox Mill (6-14, 6-9 SPC) rallied and took a three-point lead late in the game.
Williams hit a 3-pointer to tie, and Hardin got a steal and layup to put the Raiders (5-16, 4-11 SPC) ahead.
Downs made four free throws down the stretch to ice victory.

Tre Littlejohn led the Raiders (0-21, 0-15) with 18 points. Ian Bradshaw scored 14.
Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored 15 for the Chargers (16-5, 11-4).
“We played a lot harder in the second half,” South coach Andre McCain said.

Davie drops two
Davie County’s boys lost to R.J. Reynolds 70-63 in overtime on Thursday.
Nic Starnes led the War Eagles with 17 points.

Davie’s girls lost 67-47 to the Demons.
Madison Zaferatos scored 16 for the War Eagles. Emma Slabach and Ashlyn Hampton scored eight each, and Caitlyn Peebles had seven.

North-South
North Rowan guard Jalen Sanders has been named to play in the North-South All-Star Game.
West Rowan’s Mike Gurley is coaching the N.C. squad.
In its 19th year, the all-star game, which features top seniors from North Carolina against their counterparts in South Carolina, will be held Saturday, March 19, at Socastee High.
The girls game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys. Tickets are $10.
The Slam Dunk and 3-Point Contests will be held at 7 p.m., on Friday, March 18, at Myrtle Beach High. The cost is $5.

Catawba football
Catawba announced six signings on Thursday with many more to come.
Running back Quientel Goodwin (5-9, 180, Richmond County), DB Trey Murray (6-0, 170, Walterboro, S.C.), lineman Zach Mayo (6-2, 280, Mount Pleasant), linebacker L.J. Melvin (5-11, 200, Fayetteville Jack Britt), running back Andrew Bynum (6-0, 190, Wilkes Central) and defensive back Chris Webb (5-11, 165, Seneca, S.C.) have signed with the Indians.

Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys basketball team won 42-12 against Sacred Heart to finish the regular season undefeated.
Charlie Barr led the Jaguars with 10 points. Marshall Overcash scored nine, George Fisher had six, and Mitch Jeter and Hank Robins added five apiece.
The Jaguars host the boys conference tournament this weekend. Tournament games begin at 9 a.m. with Salisbury Academy’s first game at noon.

College hoops
Davidson County Community College rolled 111-97 against Sandhill CC on Wednesday.
Tre Williams (Carson) had 24 points and eight rebounds for the Storm.

Erwin’s boys beat Southeast 38-30.
Leading the way for the Eagles was David Jordan with 21 points. Jake Hunter scored five.
The Eagles will travel to Mooresville Monday.

Prep wrestling
West Forsyth advanced to the 4A state championship match by winning two matches at A.L. Brown on Thursday.
The Titans (49-0) defeated Southeast Guilford 38-30 in the quarterfinals and then went on to beat Lake Norman 39-36 in the semifinals.
Lake Norman eliminated A.L. Brown in a quarterfinal.
West Forsyth will wrestle for the state championship on Saturday.
