From staff and wire reports
South Carolina State’s Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was one of the big stories of the practices leading up to Saturday’s East-West Shrine Game.
NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah called Hargrave “the best player” there.
“He has an excellent combination of quickness and power,” Jeremiah wrote. “He dominated the one-on-one drills.”
Added Chase Goodbread of College Football 24/7: “Hargrave was consistently a headache for East offensive linemen during the practice week with first-step quickness that created backfield disruption.”
Oregon QB Vernon Adams led the West squad to a 29-9 win over the East.
The next big challenge for Hargrave will be the NFL Combine in Indianapolis Feb. 23-29.

College hoops
Catawba plays at Tusculum tonight (5:30 and 7:30), while Livingstone plays at J.C. Smith (3 and 5).
The games originally were scheduled for Saturday.

Women’s basketball
Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) had 18 points and three assists for Kennesaw State in a 57-54 loss to Stetson on Saturday.

UNC Pembroke’s Avery Locklear (South Rowan) scored 13 points in a 63-59 loss to Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

Men’s basketball
Augusta’s Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 27 points for Augusta in Saturday’s 84-73 win against Flagler.
•••
D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) scored five points for Newberry in a 91-89 loss to Carson-Newman on Sunday.

ACC hoops
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Malcom Brogdon scored 12 of his 21 points in the final 5:45 and No. 13 Virginia held off a 3-point barrage by Syracuse and beat the Orange, 73-65, ending their three-game winning streak.
Anthony Gill and London Perrantes added 16 points each for the Cavaliers (15-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who squandered all of a 10-point second-half lead, then rallied behind some clutch shooting and defense.
Michael Gbinije scored 24 points and Malachi Richerdson 23 for the Orange (13-8, 3-5).

PGA
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Jason Dufner made two great escapes. The first, from Alcatraz, no less.
David Lingmerth got no such reprieve at PGA West’s punishing TPC Stadium Course.
Dufner won the CareerBuilder Challenge with a par on the second hole of a playoff Sunday, taking advantage of Lingmerth’s shot that bounced off the jagged rocks and into the water.
In regulation on the island-green 17th called Alcatraz, Dufner — tied with Lingmerth for the lead — pulled his 8-iron tee shot and thought it bounced into the water.
Instead, it settled into a small sandy area between some of the tangled rocks that circle the green.
“I was like, ‘Man, this is a great break I’m going to take advantage of it,’” Dufner said.
He hooked a chip that struck the flagstick and stopped inches away.
