Area Sports Briefs: Catawba 5th in region

The SAC has three teams in the NCAA Super Region II football rankings.
Catawba is listed at No. 5 this week, followed by Carson-Newman at No. 7 and Wingate at No. 9.
Carson-Newman and Catawba are receiving votes in the AFCA Division II Poll. The Eagles are No. 27, with Catawba No. 33.

Catawba linebacker Kyle Kitchens was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week.
The sophomore from Decatur, Ga., posted seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss as Catawba beat Brevard 29-7.
Newberry quarterback Raleigh Yeldell is the Offensive Player of the Week. Mars Hill punter Michael Ashley is Special Teams Player of the Week.

Tusculum’s Emmanuel Gbunblee (West Rowan) had six tackles (two for loss), plus two quarterback hurries in a 31-24 loss to Mars Hill.
Tusculum hosts Catawba on Saturday.

In the BOXTOROW HBCU poll, North Carolina A&T (7-1) is ranked No. 1. Next are Grambling State and Alcorn State.

In a 56-51 loss to N.C. Wesleyan, Averett’s Dontae Gilbert (Carson) made 12 tackles, broke up a pass and returned an interception 47 yards for a TD.
Hobie Proctor (West Rowan) kicked three PATs for Averett.

Livingstone hoops
Livingstone will play an exhibition game against Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Eric Dubose and Ty Newman are back to lead the Blue Bears, the preseason favorite in the CIAA.
Duke won 115-58 against the Blue Bears last November.
Duke played its first preseason game Friday and beat D-II Florida Southern 122-68 behind 22 points by freshman Derryck Thornton.

Prep soccer
Carson is seeded third in the 3A West bracket and hosts North Iredell at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the first round of the state playoffs.

A.L. Brown is seeded 22nd in the 4A West bracket and is at No. 11 Providence in the first round.

Lexington plans to play a soggy 2A first-round match today at home against Ashe County.

Prep tennis
Salisbury was rained out Monday. The Hornets will host a third-round 2A playoff match against Hendersonville today at 4 p.m.

Prep cross country
Davie’s Nick Simmons finished 16th in the 4A Midwest Regional on Saturday.
Simmons qualified to compete in the 4A State Championships in Kernersville on Saturday.

Youth soccer
The FCCA U12 soccer team, the Green Dragons (8-0-0), won regional matches by scores of 4-1 and 5-3 over the weekend.
Maddox Goodnight and Colin Donaldson had two goals each. Bennet Clark, Wade Robins, Luis Avilez, Ben Childress and Christopher Portillo scored a goal each. Will Koontz, Reed Brixey and Ben Sweet were outstanding for the Dragons. Nick Antosek had many saves.
