Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury tennis hosts playoff match today

Salisbury’s girls tennis team (14-1) is home today at 4 p.m. against Hendersonville (also 14-1) in the third round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.
Salisbury swept South Stokes in the first round and won by forfeit against West Lincoln in the second round.

Prep soccer
Pairings are expected to be announced early today by the NCHSAA for the boys soccer playoffs.
2A Salisbury and 3A Carson are conference champions and will get high seeds.
Both should get a number of home matches. Salisbury hopes to start the playoffs as early as Tuesday, if its opponent agrees.

Prep football
This is the last week of the regular season.
West Rowan (3A), Carson (3A), North Rowan (2A), A.L. Brown (4A) and Davie (4A) are expected to be in the state playoffs. Pairings and seeds will be announced next Saturday.

Prep cross country
State championships in all classificiations will be held next Saturday in Kernersville.
Carson’s boys and Salisbury’s boys qualified to compete as teams.
Carson’s Taylor Wiggins qualified as an individual for the 3A girls event.

Prep volleyball
West Henderson hosts South Iredell in the 3A West Regional final on Tuesday.

College hoops
David Tripp (A.L. Brown) scored eight points for Davidson County Community College in Sunday’s 119-72 win against the Limestone jayvees.

College football
Defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had another strong game Saturday for South Carolina State.
Hagrave was coming off a spectacular outing against Delaware State that made him MEAC Defensive Player of the Week.
In Saturday’s 34-20 win against Hampton, Hargrave had six tackles, four for loss. He had two sacks and two QB hurries.

North Carolina A&T’s Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) had six knockdown blocks in a recent 65-14 win against Howard.

Appalachian State’s MyQuon Stout (Carson) made three tackles and had several QB hurries in a 44-41 overtime win against Troy.

Western Michigan rolled 58-28 against Eastern Michigan. Keion Adams (Salisbury) had three tackles and a QB hurry for the surging Broncos.

Logan Stoodley (West Rowan) made eight tackles for Limestone in Saturday’s loss to Carson-Newman.

Calvin Edwards had a rushing TD of 8 yards and a 40-yard reception in Lenoir-Rhyne’s loss to Newberry on Saturday.

John Knox (Salisbury) had three tackles and three pass breakups as Charleston romped 65-21 against West Virginia Wesleyan.
