Area Sports Briefs: Cougars strong in cross country meet

Carson’s boys cross country team, ranked third in 3A, finished ninth out of 43 schools in Saturday’s N.C. Runners Invitational in Kernersville.
Carson was third among the 3A schools.
Zachary Marchinko finished eighth in 15:59. Grant Doby (17:17), Garrett Ingold (17:25), Dylan Koontz (17:31), Nick Cox (17:37), Jonah Evans (18:12) and Harrison Doby (19:54) also competed for the Cougars.

Carson jayvees competing were Carter Rodgers (19:48), Jacob Higgins (19:56), Trace Bigelow (20:26) and Alex Wilson (20:32).

College soccer
Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 4-3 at Carson-Newman on Saturday despite goals by Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury), Phillip Hollenhorst and Bradley Dowdall.

Catawba’s women’s soccer team lost 4-1 at Carson Newman and dropped its sixth straight game.
Alex Twombly scored on a PK for the Indians.

College cross country
Georgia Southern’s Rebecca Parker (West Rowan) competed in the Disney Classic in Florida on Saturday and finished 29th out of 302 runners.
Parker ran 19:06.90 in the 5k event.

College volleyball
Catawba (9-9, 6-5 SAC) got 10 kills each from Bri Howard and Alex Hopper in a 25-19, 25-15 and 25-17 sweep of Brevard on Saturday.
Hannah Elmore (Carson) had six kills for the Tornados.

College football
Virginia’s Keeon Johnson (A.L. Brown) had two catches for 18 yards in Saturday’s 26-19 loss to Pitt.
