Area Sports Briefs: Dodgers call up Seager

The Los Angeles Dodgers called up their top prospect, infielder Corey Seager, on Thurday.
The former Northwest Cabarrus High and Kannapolis American Legion standout batted eighth in his MLB debut and played shortstop.
Seager doubled in his second at-bat and singled in his third trip to the plate.
Seager’s parents, Jeff and Jody, flew out to see his debut against the San Diego Padres.

South Rowan’s tennis team won 5-4 against North Rowan on Thursday.

Singles winners for the Mustangs were Katie Barnes, Angel Scialdone, Shannon Mahaffey, Lauren Weisensel, Alana Miller and Lana Jackson.
East doubles winners were Mia Graham-Kristen Brady and Emily Avalos-Sage Fann.
East’s Caroline Plyler won an exhibition match.

Prep volleyball
Carson stayed unbeaten with a 25-19, 25-16 and 25-7 SPC win against West Rowan on Thursday.

East Rowan won 30-28, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-12 at Hickory Ridge in SPC volleyball on Thursday.

South Rowan lost 25-11, 22-25, 25-9 and 25-11 to Cox Mill on Thursday in SPC volleyball.

Prep soccer
Omar Curiel, Lupe Bautista and Casey Ayala scored goals for South Rowan in a 3-1 SPC win against East Rowan on Thursday.
Walker Joyce had two assists for the Raiders.
Alex Kalogeromitros scored for East Rowan .
• Carson won 5-3 against Cox Mill in SPC soccer on Thursday.
Carson led 3-1 at halftime.
Brandon Flores and Raunel Vasquez scored two goals each, and Khalid Myers scored one for the Cougars.
Flores and Pedro Perez had assists. Grayson Owens had a strong game in goal.

Jayvee football
North Rowan lost 20-0 to Statesville on Thursday.

Standouts for the Mustangs included Hassan Biggus and Colton Carico.

College soccer
Pfeiffer’s men scored three early goals and won 6-0 against Newberry on Thursday afternoon.

College football
Freshman Daveon Perry (A.L. Brown) and redshirt freshman Kyrell Williamson (A.L. Brown) played for Winston-Salem State in a 17-7 loss to UNC Pembroke on Thursday.
Williamson, a linebacker, had three tackles. Perry had a 13-yard punt return and a 25-yard kickoff return.

Intimidators
Mason Robbins drove in four runs as Kannapolis beat West Virginia 10-6 on Thursday.
Robbins had his ninth triple of the season. Toby Thomas scored three runs.

Mid. school softball
West Rowan won 6-1 against Erwin.
Tori Hester was the winning pitcher. Ally Young had three hits. Caylie Keller and Allison Ennis had two hits each.

Mid. school tennis
Knox defeated China Grove 6-3 on Thursday,
Singles winners for Knox were Lillie Rusher, Anna Grace Woolly, Quinnlan Watson, Elle Kennedy, Meredith Burton and Gabby Fisher.
Knox will travel to Southeast on Sept. 8.

Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart’s varsity won 3-1 against Hickory Christian.
Scoring for the Dolphins (3-0) were Juan Salazar, Colin Donaldson and Cole Hansen. Ben Childress and Riley Dillon were cited for outstanding play.

Drew Hansen scored two goals. A.J. Flynn, Kyna Zaldivar and Jake Denhard had a goal each.
John David Bonilla led the Dolphins’ defense.

Marshall Overcash, Chad van der Poel, George Fisher, Archie Dees and Walker Hartpence led the defense.
