Area Sports Briefs: Carson strong in Providence Invitational

Carson’s cross country boys team ran strong at the Providence Invitational in Charlotte on Saturday.
The Cougars were seventh out of 32 teams in the championship division.
The top three teams are ranked nationally. Carson beat a number of teams ranked in the top in 4A.
Carson’s Zachary Marchinko broke his own county record, finishing second out of 274 runners with a time of 15:31.
Carson’s next four runners all ran personal bests — Garrett Ingold (16:32), Grant Doby (16:43), Nick Cox (16:56) and Dylan Koontz (16:57).

In the open race at the Providence Invitational, Davie’s Nick Simmons was second in 16:15. A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez was third in 16:18. Gray Stone’s Jordy Featherstone was 15th in 17:08, and East Rowan’s Sean Incardona was 16th in 17:09.

Intimidators
Reliever David Trexler struck out nine of the 13 batters he faced and led the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 9-4 win at Hagerstown on Saturday.
