The Pre-Rowan County Cross Country Meet is set for today at Dan Nicholas Park.
The boys race is at 5 p.m., while the girls will start at 5:45 p.m.
Carson’s boys and girls swept the Pre-Rowan County Cross Country Meet last August.
West Rowan’s Josie Heglar won both the pre-county and county meets last year as a junior.
East’s Conor Honeycutt swept the pre-county and county meets last year as a senior. Carson’s Zachary Marchinko is the favorite this time.
NBA: Hornets
CHARLOTTE — Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has agreed to a four-year, $52 million contract extension with the Charlotte Hornets, a person familiar with the situation said Monday.
The 6-foot-7, 232-pound Kidd-Gilchrist is known primarily for his defense but increased his offensive output last season. He averaged a career-high 10.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists, although he was limited to 55 games due to injuries. He shot 46.5 percent from the field.
Kidd-Gilchrist, 21, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, taken one spot behind his former Kentucky teammate Anthony Davis.
Prep volleyball
South Rowan won 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22 at Salisbury on Monday in non-conference action.
South is 2-0, while Salisbury is 0-4.
South Rowan is home today against Northwest Cabarrus in its first SPC match.
Local golf
The 5th annual Tee Off for a Veteran Tournament will be held at Warrior on Oc. 3.
Organized by Bryan Holliday this event has grown each year. Funds raised go to two local groups that help local veterans.
The format is Captain’s Choice with four-man teams. Twosomes and individuals are welcome and will be paired.
Registration is at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and silent auction at 12:15 p.m. Shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

Labor Day 4-Ball
Invitations for the Labor Day Crowder/Dorsett Memorial 4-Ball Tournament, Sept. 4-7, have been sent to prospective participants.
Any Rowan Country resident, or past participant of the event who did not receive an invitation, can stop by the Country Club of Salisbury Golf Shop to obtain an entry into the event.
Applications will be accepted up Sunday, Aug. 23, and qualifying begins on Aug. 28.

Salisbury’s Grace Yatawara shot 71-74 — 145 for fifth place in the 13th Joe Cheves Junior Invitational held at Mimosa Hills in Morganton.
East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 74-69 — 143 and tied for 21st at 1-under.
Cannon School’s Michael Childress shot 76-76 — 152. East Rowan’s Logan Shuping shot 80-74 – 154.
McCanless
The McCanless Couples played Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The team of David Huneycutt, Azalee Story and Mary Seaford took first place.
The second-place team was Tim Earnhardt, Walt Kincaid and Jimmie Jones.
Huneycutt won longest putt.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for:

Free tennis clinic
Salisbury High’s girls tennis team will conduct a free clinic for elementary school youngsters on Sept. 19 from 10-11:30 a.m.
Fundamentals will be taught. No tennis experience is required. Children who have an interest in playing tennis but have never tried it are urged to attend.
There will be rackets available.

SAC women’s soccer
Catawba’s women’s soccer team was picked fifth in the SAC preseason poll.
Lenoir-Rhyne got seven of the 12 first-place votes and is the league favorite. Wingate received five first-place votes and was picked second.
Catawba’s Bethany Davis was voted the preseason first-team goalkeeper.
The SAC women’s soccer season starts on Thursday, Sept. 3.
