Area Sports Briefs: State title for Rowan softball 11-12 team

The Rowan Little League 11-12 softball won the state championship held in Washington.
Rowan defeated Garner 16-0 and Myers Park 12-2 to advance to the winner’s bracket final against Wilkes County.
Rowan defeated Wilkes 1-0 by scoring in the last inning and beat Wilkes 9-1 for the championship.
The team will be traveling to Warner Robins, Ga .,to play in the Little League Southeast Regional, starting July 30.
If they win the regional, they will advance to the World Series in Portland, Ore.

Mason Robbins’ four-hit game powered the Intimidators past the Grasshoppers, 6-2, on Wednesday at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro.
Robbins finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
Kannapolis (14-12 second half, 49-46 season) scored five of its six runs with two outs.
Kelvis Valerio (1-0) earned the win, working three relief innings.
Matt Cooper spun a perfect ninth to slam the door on the Grasshoppers.
The Intimidators continue this three-game series on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Alvarez promoted
The Kannapolis Intimidators have promoted shortstop Eddy Alvarez to the Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem Dash.
In a corresponding move, the Intimidators have received infielder Cody Daily from the Rookie-level Arizona League White Sox.
Alvarez, an Olympic silver medalist from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, has appeared in 89 games with Kannapolis, batting .285 (94-for-330) with 23 doubles, six triples, two home runs, 39 RBIs and 42 stolen bases. He leads the South Atlantic League in walks (69) and runs scored (64).

Craig Brooks (Catawba) pitched a scoreless inning in Arizona on Monday for the Cubs rookies.
Peeler update
Joe Peeler (East Rowan) got the last out on a groundball in a game Monday in Arizona and earned his second save as the Mariners rookies beat the Reds.

East-West football
The score was tied 6-6 at halftime, but the East all-stars ran off 21 straight points in the second half to take a 27-13 victory over the West all-stars late Wednesday night in Greensboro. A.L. Brown’s Mike Newsome coached the West squad.
