Area Sports Briefs: First-round pairings set for state tourney

Pairings for the first round of the state tournament at Newman Park were finalized on Tuesday.
First-round games will be played Friday.
9 a.m.
Area IV runner-up Caldwell County vs. Area II champion Hope Mills
Noon
Area IV champion Haywood County vs. Area III No. 3 Eastern Randolph
3 p.m.
Area I champion Garner vs. Area III No. 2 High Point
7 p.m.
Area III champion Rowan County vs. No. Area I No. 2 Wilson

Prep football
Pine Forest offensive lineman Demetrius Blackwell and Millbrook linebacker Julian Williams, a pair of Catawba football signees, are slated to play for the East squad in Wednesday’s East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro.
The game starts at 8 p.m.
West Rowan offensive lineman Jacob Radtke, who is headed to Guilford, will play for the West squad.
A.L. Brown’s Mike Newsome is the head coach of the West squad.
Savannah Smith from Carson and Kaitlyn Burgess from East Rowan will be cheering for the West squad.

Local golf
Salisbury’s Christopher Queen shot 5-over 75 at Camden County Club and tied for 16th.
He qualified for for the Carolinas Junior Boys Championship at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro.
GARS
Forty-nine GARS members played their own foursomes at Lexington Country Club.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 66.39. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Frank Rowell with a net of 64.63.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Carrol Downey with a net of 63.41. Low ‘D’ Flight player was John Rader with a net of 70.92.
Corbin Hills
Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association results:
The first-place team of Becky Isenhour, Susan Wydner, Joy Maughmer and Sheryl Johnson.
The second-place team was Cathy Fleming, Bev Cobb, Carolynn Ries and Karla Swanson.
Fundraiser
The East Rowan Diamond Sports golf tourneament will be held on Oct.s 3.
The cost is $200 per team or $50 per person.

East-West soccer
Tresor Mbuyu (Garinger) scored two goals and had an assist to lead the West boys to a 4-1 win against the East in Tuesday’s all-star game in Greensboro.
Girls
Megan McCallister (A.C. Reynolds) was the MVP as the West beat the East all-stars 2-1.
McCallister, who signed with Charlotte, scored in the 61st minute on a breakaway.

Prep softball
Davie County pitcher Olivia Boger gave a verbal commitment to Mercer.
