Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly leads qualifying for Rowan Amateur

Nick Lyerly’s 72 led qualifying for the Rowan Amateur on Friday.
Gary Miller, Dwayne McIntyre and Brad Vinson shot 74s.
Other scores: George Benfield (75), Shane Benfield (76), Tyler Mulkey (80), Chuck Valley (84) and Chris Shackleford (93).
Qualifying will continue on Saturday and Sunday at Corbin Hills.
Irish Creek
In the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open, Grayson Murray is 19-under for three rounds after shooting 63-64-64—191 at The Club at Irish Creek.
He owns a four-shot lead in a $100,000 event.
Eight-time tour winner Frank Adams III is tied for third at 13-under. Adams has shot 65-67-65 — 197.
Adams was 6-under par through 11 holes on Friday before riding a six-hole par train to a closing bogey on 18 for his 5-under 65.
The 36-year-old has notched 10 top-25s in 10 starts this year, including career win No. 8 at the $200,000 Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC Open in May.

Carolinas Amateur
Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 2-over 74 in Saturday’s second round and is 2-under for the tournament.
Edwards made two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars.
Edwards is tied for 33rd.
Victor Wiggins shot a course-record 64 and holds a one-shot lead.

Junior Legion
West Rowan defeated Carson 6-1 on Friday to sweep a best-of-three second-round series.
West Rowan scored four runs in the second.
Olen Stamper pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for the win.
West Rowan was led at the plate by Dillon Simpson with three hits. Brandon Walton had a double and two RBIs. Travis Cone had two hits. Payne Stolsworth had a double and drove in a run. Stamper hit a solo homer.
Cameron Prugh pitched five innings for Carson.
Pearce Wilhelm had two hits. Wilhelm doubled and scored Carson’s run on a hit by Daniel Leonard.
Carson finished 21-10.
West Rowan advances to the third round to play the Davidson County Braves.
Davidson swept Randolph County.
West Rowan hosts Davidson County in Game 1 on Sunday.

Legion baseball
Randolph County won 9-6 against Davidson County at McCrary Park on Friday and won their second-round series three games to two.
Fourth-seeded Randolph advances to play Rowan County in the Area III semifinals.
The best-of-five series starts at Newman Park on Sunday.
Second-seeded High Point takes on No. 3 seed Eastern Randolph in the other semifinal series.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators erupted offensively and beat Charleston 12-6 on Friday at Riley Park.
Kannapolis (8-8 second half, 43-42) has won six of its last eight.
With two outs in the eighth inning and the game tied 6-6, Eddy Alvarez smashed a bases-clearing double down the right-field line and scored on an errant throw by RiverDogs outfielder Alexander Palma for a 10-6 lead.
