Area Sports Briefs: Johnson shines in CPL outing

Connor Johnson (East Rowan, Catawba) pitched a complete game on Sunday in the Coastal Plain League.
Johnson went the distance with five strikeouts and two earned runs in a 5-4 victory against High Point.
• Carson Herndon (Davie, Liberty) is pitching for the Peninsula Pilots in the CPL.
Herndon (1-3) took a loss on Saturday despite pitching pretty well in a starting assignment. He allowed two hits and one run and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to Wilson.
Minor leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered Saturday and Sunday for Columbus, bringing his season total of home runs to 12.
Local golf
The 37th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur Championship is scheduled for July 17-19 at Corbin Hills.
The entry fee is $25, plus applicable cart and green fee for the event. The entry deadline is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
The low 31 qualifiers and defending champion Eric Mulkey will advance to championship match play.
Tournament qualifying is July 10-12.
South shooting clinic
South Rowan YMCA is having a basketball shooting clinic for anyone in grades 3-8 on July 13-15, from 9 a.m. until noon.
Former South Rowan and Pfeiffer star Damien Argrett, who played professionally in Europe, will instruct the clinic.
Focus will be on proper mechanics. Players will be evaluated, and given shooting charts and programs to help develop skills beyond the clinic.

Junior Legion
When West Rowan Junior Legion hosts Carson in Game 2 of a best-of-three series on Thursday at 7 p.m., all youth wearing their softball/baseball jersey will get free admission to the game.
Youth track
The Hurley YMCA Warriors track and field team competed in the North Carolina AAU Area 25 Regional Qualifier in Charlotte.
Top-6 finishers in running events received medals and/or ribbons and qualified. Top-5 finishers in field events qualified and top-4 finishers in multi-events qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships in Norfolk.

The next meet for the Warriors will be the Charlotte Panthers track meet at Vance High on July 18.
Intimidators
Monday night’s game between the Kannapolis Intimidators and Augusta GreenJackets was postponed due to rain and unplayable field conditions at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday with two 7-inning games beginning at 12:05 p.m.
Kannapolis continues aseason-long nine-game road trip Tuesday with Spencer Adams (4-4) slated to take the mound in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Yelmison Peralta (2-7, 6.79 ERA) will toe the rubber in Game 2.
The Intimidators return home on Tuesday.July 14, for a seven-game homestand.
