Area Sports Briefs: Southern Rowan romps

Southern Rowan rolled 12-2 against visiting Greensboro in seven innings on Wednesday.
Southern Rowan (11-8, 6-4) has won its last two games and three out of four.
Chase Labbe hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs.
Chandler Corroher had a triple and a two-run single.
Eric Stowe and Matt Honeycutt drove in two runs each. Aldyn Blackwelder had a triple.
Matt Brown, Tanner Christy, Brandon Newton and Corriher pitched.
Greensboro fell to 1-11 and 1-9 in league play.
Southern Rowan hosts Stanly on Friday and is at Rowan County on Saturday.
Southern Rowan is in sixth place in Area III.
• Rowan travels to play High Point tonight in the biggest game of the season.
The game will start at the regular time of 7 p.m., although the game had been listed as a 6 p.m. contest on schedules.
Rowan (13-4, 8-0) is in first place, while High Point (15-2, 7-1) is in second place.
Rowan has won 11 straight and will send Omar Bautista to the mound.
• In other league games on Wednesday, Concord surprised Kernersville 5-4, Mocksville outscored Mooresville 13-12, Eastern Randolph handed Winston-Salem a 16-6 loss.
In a non-league game, Randolph County rolled 12-2 against Shelby.

Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators open a nine-game homestand and the second half of the season on Thursday with a game against Asheville at 7:05 p.m.
• Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit a solo homer for Columbus in a 5-4 loss to Norfolk on Wednesday in International League action.
Sands is batting .254 with 22 RBIs for the Clippers.
• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit two homers for Oklahoma City on Wednesday in a 7-6 loss to Colorado Springs in Pacific Coast League action.

Local golf
In the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open in Morgaton, Frank Adams III shot a first-round 71.
Barton assistant coach Daniel Claytor shot a blazing 60 for a three-shot lead on the field.

Baseball camp
The 27th annual Piedmont Pitcher/Catcher Camp will be held July 1-2 at Central Davidson High.
The camp is for ages 6-18. Instructors include Duke coach Chris Pollard.

Carson Cougar Running and Fitness Camp will be held on July 13-17 in the fields across from the South Rowan YMCA.

Girls basketball camps:
July 20-23, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising kindergarten through 4th grade girls
July 27-30, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising fifth through eighth grade girls
Cost is $60 for each camp and includes camper insurance and a T-shirt.
