Altrusa Club holds Reading Festival

MOUNT ULLA —  On Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Patterson Farm, 10390 Caldwell Road, there will be games, story telling, story writing, face painting and music. A free age appropriate-book will be given to each preschool and elementary school child as they leave the event.

Several authors of children’s books will be present to read from their books.

There will be free hot dogs and Cheerwine for children under age 10, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club.

The Salisbury Altrusa Club, promoting literacy as its primary emphasis and supporting school readiness, is sponsoring this event in partnership with Patterson Farm. This event is made possible through a grant award from the Altrusa International Foundation and through donations from Friends of Rowan Public Library and other local organizations and individuals.

Altrusa hopes to distribute 500 books at this family-oriented event.

Delegates attend Alpha Kappa Alpha Legislative Day

Members of Delta Xi Omega Chapter and Alpha Xi Chapter recently attended the AKA N.C. Legislative Day in Raleigh.

Lillian L. Morgan, president of the graduate Chapter, Carolyn P. Holt, undergraduate advisor, Yolanda R. Woods, connections committee chairman, Deanca Crouch, undergraduate chapter president, and Annick Dalton were welcomed by Yvonne Simmons Pettis, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., N.C. state connection coordinator and David Robinson as well as Governor Patrick McCrory.

Also on hand was An’Jou C. Johnson, mid-atlantic representative to the international connection committee. Deanca Crouch gave the meditation for the event.

The theme for the day was Alpha Kappa Alpha “Call to A.C.T.I.O.N.”  (Advocate, Communicate, Train, Influence, Organize and Network). Representative from the N.C. board of elections gave update on voting procedures. Senator Josh Stein, House of Representatives Yvonne Lewis Holly and Larry Hall spoke of the upcoming budget, prosecutorial assistance and the introductions of several new bills. It was noted Congresswoman Alma Adams initiated the first national HBCU Caucus in the senate. The honorable Cheri Beasley, another member of the sorority, moderated a panel discussion on the responsibilities of the grand jury and what we as citizens need to be aware of.

Yolanda R. Woods served on the special projects committee, which presented Hunter GT/AIG Magnet Elementary School with 249 backpacks filled with non-perishable food items. The more than 200 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha in attendance presented the Raleigh Rescue Mission with more than 2,192 items for their food pantry.

 

Jobs for Life mini-workshop

Charting Your Career Course,” a Jobs for Life mini-workshop, is set for Saturday, May 30 from 9:45 a.m. until Noon. Planned in conjunction with First Baptist Church-Salisbury’s Operation Inasmuch, a community outreach mission, this one-day event will offer eight workshops to assist job-seekers who wish to learn how to “become the person they want to hire.” Topics include:

• “Destinations, Detours and Dead Ends” – Developing a vocational plan
• “Bridges and Barriers” – Communication and conflict resolution
• “The Journey With Joseph” – The ideal employee
• “Knowing Your Vehicle” – Identifying your personality and interests
• “The Road BEST Travelled” – Who is your customer?
• “Rules of the Road” – Interviewing skills
• “Travelogues & Trip Tickets” – How to write a resume
• “Dents & Dings: Where Do I Go When I Need Help?” – panel discussion including representatives of RCCC, Rowan Helping Ministries, United Way, and other agencies
