Area Sports Briefs: SAC tournaments upcoming

Catawba’s softball team  opens play in the double-elimination SAC tournament with a 10 a.m. game on Thursday against Lenoir-Rhyne.

The tournament will be played in Hartsville, S.C. Catawba is the No. 3 seed.

• Belmont Abbey pitcher Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) had a tremendous  day on Saturday.

Jacobs (9-10) pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 6-0 win against King.

Jacobs saved the other game in Belmont Abbey’s doubleheader with King, striking out four in two innings for a 6-4 win.

• Campbell’s Ericka Nesbitt (East Rowan) leads the Big South Conference with 69 hits and a .429 batting average.

• Logan Lowery (South Rowan) has done well as a freshman pitcher at N.C. Wesleyan. Lowery has a 7-9 record with two saves. She has an ERA of 2.67 and 70 strikeouts.

• Steffi Sides (East Rowan) was 2-for-3 and drove in a run in Guilford’s 8-0 win against Bridgewater on Saturday.

College baseball

Catawba starts play in the SAC tournament on Friday. The Indians will face the lowest-seeded survivor from Thursday’s play-in games at noon at Forest City’s McNair Field.

• On Senior Day at Guilford on Saturday, senior Avery Rogers (East Rowan) finished off a 6-0 shutout against William Peace.Rogers struck out the final batter he faced in what may be his last college outing.

Rogers had a 3.74 ERA this season.

• Dustin Ritchie (East Rowan) went 4-for-7 as Pitt Community College split a doubleheader with  USC Salkahatchie on Saturday.

College golf

The first round of the SAC Championships was rained out on Sunday.

The tournament will be shortened to two rounds.

• UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 1-over 73  in the first round of the Southern Conference Championships at Pinehurst and is tied for 10th.

Dixon made three birdies.

Prep baseball

Three makeup baseball games are scheduled Monday.

West Davidson at North Rowan is scheduled for 7 p.m. The teams are tied for first in the CCC with 4-0 records.

In SPC games, Cox Mill is scheduled to play at South Rowan, while East Rowan is at Hickory Ridge.

Minor leagues

Sunday’s scheduled game between the Kannapolis Intimidators and Hickory Crawdads was rained out.

It will be made up as part of a doubleheader when the Crawdads return to Kannapolis on May 21.

• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) is batting .500 in  10 Double-A games for Tulsa.  Seager has only been hitless in one game. He’s had  a four-hit game and a three-hit game.

• Continuing his comeback from Tommy John surgery, Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) is on a rehab assignment with the New York Mets farm team in St. Lucie, Fla.

Parnell’s velocity is not all the way back yet, and   he’s being clocked at 89-93 mph. He’s allowed four hits, two walks and two runs in two innings.

• Chris Dula (Catawba) is pitching for the Hickory Crawdads and won his first decision of the season.

• Lefty Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) is off to a strong start with the Peoria Cardinals.  Lomascolo has three straight scoreless relief appearances and has struck out 12 batters in six innings.

Legion baseball

Sign-ups for Post 66 Moors American Legion baseball are  Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at Lake Norman High.

   

Stallions baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader from Raleigh Homeschool, winning 7-1 and 14-2.

Noah Jarrett and Hunter Shepherd had three hits each in the opener, while Dalton Lankford and Caleb Threadgill had two.

Sawyer Strickland pitched a seven-hitter and struck out six.

  Leading hitters in  the second game were McConner Wallace and Shepherd with three hits each.   Isaiah Boger, Jarrett and Tyler Hartsell had two.

Shepherd picked up the win on the mound.

The Stallions (19-4, 6-0) are scheduled at  East Montgomery on Monday.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s baseball team lost 10-1 against GCAA. Jack Fisher struck out seven in four innings.

  • In Sacred Heart’s 16-3 win against North Hills,   Blaine Shellhorn and Reilly Ploplis pitched and combined for 13 strikeouts.

Max Crawford had three hits and scored four runs.  Shellhorn, Luke Holland, Zach Robinette and Will Austin had two hits apiece.

• In a 15-3 win against Salisbury Academy,    Ploplis had three hits and was the winning pitcher.   Robinette and Holland had two hits each. The Dolphins (3-1) pounded out 18 hits.

Kannapolis Komets

The Kannapolis Komets girls travel basketball team is starting its 10th year of competition and kept alive a streak of winning at least one tournament every season by winning the Roundball Classic in Winston-Salem on Saturday.

The Komets beat the Hickory Lady Titans in the championship  game after defeating teams from Raleigh, Durham and Cary.

The Komets are coached by club founder Doug Wilson and includes players from Carson, South Rowan, North Meck and Kannapolis.

Local golf

The 34th Annual Edgar Welch Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played at 9 a.m. on May 19 and May 21 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.

The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.

Entry forms are available at local clubs.  The $60  fee includes golf, carts, prizes and the luncheon on May 21.

The format is net best-ball twosome.  Gross prizes also are awarded.

The defending champions are Bev Cobb and Eileen Full.

The tournament is played in memory of Edgar Welch.  Welch’s wife, Elaine, established the tournament in  his memory.
