South Piedmont Conference baseball, soccer and softball action was rained out on Wednesday and rescheduled for Thursday.

West Rowan is at Carson; East Rowan is at Hickory Ridge; Cox Mill is at South Rowan, and Central Cabarrus is at Concord.

Five SPC baseball teams are within a game of first place in an unusually balanced race.

West Rowan (7-3)  is in first place, but fifth-place Carson (6-4) can tie the Falcons with a victory.

South Rowan, Concord and Cox Mill are all 7-4.

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s home game with USC Aiken was rained out on Wednesday.

Catawba is home against Tusculum on Friday and Saturday. Catawba (21-5 SAC)  needs one win  in the three-game series with the Pioneers to clinch an outright conference championship.

• Catawba’s Shaefer Shepard was named SAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Shepard threw a seven-inning complete game win against Mars Hill. He struck out seven Lions and allowed one walk and a run.

•Catawba plays at home Wednesday at 6 p.m. against USC-Aiken.

Indians honored

Seven Catawba women’s lacrosse players were named to the All-SAC team.

Hannah Scott was named the SAC Freshman of the Year.

Juniors Alyssa Corace, Kourtney Jones and Bethany Davis were first team selections.

• Four Catawba men’s players were honored.

Daniel Rew was named first team specialist on the All-SAC team.

Jacob Breig was a second team pick. Connor Kennedy and Adam Hebert earned honorable mention honors.

College tennis

Catawba’s Pierce Hoover was named second team All-South Atlantic Conference.

The junior was 15-9 at the No. 1 position.

College track

Livingstone competed in a meet hosted by Johnson C. Smith.

Quanera Hayes won the 400 meters in 53.02 seconds. She also ran 23.48 in the 200 meter dash for second place.

Ebony Moore won the shot put with a throw of 13.30 meters.

Freshman Ashley Wingo broke the school record with 38.82 meters in the hammer throw.

The men’s 4×400 relay team of Tollis Johnson, Otis Tisdale, Arthur Burnett, and William Tatum won in 3:23.27.

Garland Archie (North Rowan) threw a personal best  44.70 meters in the discus to place third. He was second in the shot put  with a throw of 14.65 meters.

The Blue Bears are preparing for the CIAA Championships.

     

Junior golf

Local golfers competed in the TYGA Junior High School Invitational played on Monday at Treyburn in Durham..

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 72 for fifth place.

Hoke Carlton the grandson of Dr. Tommy Carlton from Salisbury had a 76 and tied for 13th. Concord’s Walker Cress also shot 76.

Cannon School’s Michael Childress and East Rowan’s Logan Shuping shot 78s and tied for 26th.

Prep golf

In MECKA golf at Cabarrus Country Club, Hough shot 150 to win the match.

A.L. Brown shot 193 for fifth place. McKinley Brown shot 44 to lead the Wonders.

• Salisbury won a CCC golf match at Colonial.

The Hornets shot 156 to top East Davidson (163), North Rowan (215) and Lexington (227).

Abraham Post shot 35 to pace the Hornets. Other scorers were Simon Post (40), Alex Antosek (40) and Gabe Steinman (41).

NCHSAA

Four outstanding individuals from the world of high school officiating will be honored with an award for lifetime achievement.

Wiley Barrett of Southern Pines, Charles A. “Slim” Carriker of Winston-Salem, Harry Helmer of Elm City and Larry Honeycutt of Wilmington are the recipients of the ninth annual Golden Whistle Merit Award.

• Karen Foley of Glenn and Jamie Brown of Knightdale are winners of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Performance of the Week awards.

Foley, an outstanding softball player, hit three home runs in a 9-2 holiday tournament victory over South StokesShe was the winning pitcher in three games and hit five homers for the week.

Brown, a senior track standout, won a pair of events at Saturday’s Wake County Track and Field Championships.  He won the high jump by clearing 6-2 and also won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, two inches.

Middle school golf

Salisbury Academy fired a 183 to win a tri-match with Concordia (184) and Sacred Heart (197) at Country Club of Salisbury. The Jaguars were led by Medalist Charlie Barr with 43. He was followed by Mitch Jeter (44), Hank Robins (46), Will Fowler (50) and Walker Hartpence (50). Salisbury Academy is 8-1.

West Junior Legion

West Rowan Junior Legion Baseball is now holding sign-ups on Sunday, April 19, at

4  p.m. at West Rowan High in the Media Center.

Players need to bring a certified birth certificate to the meeting. At least

Middle school soccer

Erwin’s boys won 7-1 against Corriher-Lipe.

Alex Kalogeromitros tallied a hat trick, while Landon Ketchie and James Lomax scored two goals apiece.

Lomax assisted on three goals.  Ketchie added two assists, while Kalogeromitros added one assist.

Hunter Eagle had nine saves in goal.

Middle school tennis

Knox was defeated by West Rowan 6-3 on Tuesday.  Winners in singles for Knox were Roarke Burton and Luke Grenoble.

  Burton-Grenoble also won in doubles.  Knox will host Erwin on Thursday.
